Human Race Walkers, Runners Hurdle Puddles For Good Cause

Rain and wind did not stop participants from getting out to raise funds for local charities last weekend.

The first in Illinois was held in McHenry Saturday, despite the wind and rain.

The Human Race was started 30 years ago in Sonoma County, California. In their first race, they raised $1,800 for charities. Last year, the Sonoma race attracted more than 10,000 participants and raised nearly $750,000.

This year the race was held at the McHenry Corporate Park.

Runners and walkers could choose from a variety of charities including: food pantries, animal shelters, environmental organizations, counseling services, mentoring services, therapeutic services and sports organizations. The only requirement for charities is that they are a 501c3 organization serving McHenry County.

One of the teams that participated in the event was VOICE Sexual Assault Services Survivor Sprint.

VOICE Sexual Assault Services is a division of , the largest social service agency in McHenry County providing services to the most at-risk youth and the most vulnerable community members.

According to the Pioneer Center, the challenging economy has resulted in VOICE seeing a rise in the victims and families it serves. Last year, VOICE provided counseling and advocacy services to 146 victims and their significant others and provided education and training to over 6,000 individuals.

All services are free and confidential and are available to all residents of McHenry County.
