UPDATE: Area Road Closings for Saturday

A flood warning remains in effect for McHenry County.

Officials have announced various road closures today in the area because of flooding. 

As of 11 a.m. on Saturday, the following roads in Algonquin were closed due to water on pavement:

  • LaFox River Drive from Washington Street to Cornish Park
  • Fox River Drive from Rattray Drive to End

Cornish Park remains closed to the public.

As of 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning, River Road is closed between Charles J. Miller Road and Lily Lake Road in McHenry due to flooding and overnight ice, according to the McHenry County Sheriff's Office. 

The area is open to local traffic only and will be closed until further notice, according to the sheriff's office.

The village of Algonquin is continuing to urge motorists Friday to avoid the area surrounding downtown Algonquin due to flooding on roads adjacent to the Fox River, according to a press release. 

High water levels on streets on Algonquin east side have receded, according to the press release, but flooding still remains in the area. The Fox River is expected to rise another inch in the coming days before starting to reced, according to the National Weather Service.

On Friday, Cornish Park in Algonquin and Ken Carpenter Park in Lake in the Hills remained. 

The McHenry County Conservation District closed all of its canoe launches and landings along the Nippersink Creek. The riverfront of the Hickory Grove Conservatoin Area in Cary was also closed Friday.

The following roads are affected by heavy rains.

The Sheriff’s Office is working with the Townships, County Highway, and State Highway authorities to keep residents updated on the status of the affected roadways.

Heavy rain is causing a mess on local roads this morning.

As of 8 a.m., the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office provided information on the following road closures in McHenry County:

  • Algonquin Road between Route 31 and Pyott Road in Algonquin. There is high-standing water in the area of the Western Bypass construction that forced officials to close Algonquin Road, according to Algonquin Police. 
  • Kemman Road north of Van Der Karr Road — the roadway is washed out

High-standing water was reported on the following roadways: 

  • Route 20 at County Line Road in Marengo

  • River Road between Route 23 and Squire Road in Marengo

  • Route 23 at Collins Road in Marengo

  • Oak Grove Road between Route 173 and Wright Road in Harvard

  • St. Patricks Road at Murray Road in Woodstock

  • Route 31 at Ringwood Road in Ringwood
    • Riverdale Road and Dee Drive in Island Lake

    Heavy rain is causing a mess on local roads this morning.

    Algonquin Road between Pyott Road and Route 31 is closed this morning, according to STAR 105.5 and Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Patch Facebook comments. The roadway remained closed as of 7:30 a.m. 

    Flooding has also been reported on the Edens, Eisenhower and Kennedy expressways in the Chicago area, according to the Chicago Tribune. 

    A flood warning is currently in effect for McHenry County. New rain accumulation of one to two inches is expected today while 3.76 inches of rain had fallen in McHenry County as of this morning, according to the National Weather Service.

    Meanwhile, there are several flash flood and flood warnings in counties throughout the Chicago suburbs Thursday. 

    A flash flood warning is also in effect for the Fox River at the Algonquin tailwater in McHenry and Kane counties. 

    Algonquin officials provided sandbags to those living in low-lying areas around the Fox River Wednesday and is encouraging people to use the sandbags ahead of flooding. Sandbags are available at the Algonquin Wastewater Treatment Facility located at 125 Wilbrandt Street.

    Plans were in the works to address any flooding issues. 

    Rain Causes Issues Throughout the Chicago Area

    On the south side of Chicago, there was a sink hole at 96th and Houston that has swallowed three cars and WGN News said it has doubled in size in less than 30 minutes.

    The Des Plaines River could crest Friday at three and a half feet over flood level, according to the Chicago Tribune.

    Weatherman Tom Skilling said "A serious flood threat continues as waves of downpour-generating thunderstorms sweep across this area's rain-saturated terrain at regular intervals through Thursday evening. The potential for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, remains elevated into Thursday evening."
