Aunt of Gunman in Connecticut Shooting is from Crystal Lake

Marsha Lanza of Crystal Lake told media outlets Friday her family was in shock and "shaken to the core" over the news. Her nephew, Adam Lanza, is the suspected shooter in a mass murder at a Conn. Elementary School.

As the country reels over the tragic shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, one local family is especially trying to make sense of what happened Friday.

Marsha Lanza, the aunt of the gunman Adam Lanza, lives in Crystal Lake and told the Associated Press Friday she was close with her sister-in-law and Adam's mother, Nancy Lanza. She described Nancy Lanza as "a good mother and kind-hearted" and said she sent her a Facebook message Friday morning but never heard back.

Nancy Lanza is believed to be the first victim in Friday's shooting. After shooting Nancy Lanza in her home, Adam Lanza is believed to have driven his mother's car to Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. and opening fire on the school, according to the New York Times.

Twenty-six people are dead in the shooting, including 20 children. The remaining victims in the shooting are expected to be identified Saturday, according to Newtown Patch.

Marsha Lanza has lived with her family in Crystal Lake since 1999 and has five boys, two who attend Prairie Ridge High School, according to the Northwest Herald. Her husband, Nancy's brother, is currently in North Carolina for work, according to the article.

She told the Northwest Herald late Friday they were in total shock and "shaken to the core."

There were conflicting reports late Friday night over Nancy Lanza's connection to Sandy Hook Elementary School. The majority of media reports Friday listed Nancy as part of the teaching staff at the school.

A Wall Street Journal late Friday cited a former school board official who said "no one has heard of her" and that the "teachers don't know her."

Maybe she can answer why on earth her sister in law would own a semi automatic rifle? I get owning the hand guns, don't agree with it but I get that it was her right according to the unfortunate way the law is but a semi? Come on, that's insane to own & illegal in CT. from what all the news (MSNBC, etc) have been reporting.
Karen December 15, 2012 at 02:47 PM
@ Kim...what a cold-hearted and uncompassionate statement! Really?!
Anthony P. December 15, 2012 at 04:36 PM
Hey guess what Kim, its called the second amendment. There are people doing hard core drugs in your neighborhood and they are not hard to get. Looks like the drug laws aren't working either. Keep drinking the Kool Aid from the biased liberal media and live your sheltered suburbanite life. God bless the families and victims in this horrific tragedy.
A December 15, 2012 at 05:20 PM
I'm sure the second amendment covers all kinds of crazy weapons, right? I'm sure our founding fathers intended for every Joe IQ to carry a gun. Not just any gun, but one that fired a million rounds a second. I wonder that the father of that seven year old in PA thinks about his guns now? You know, the one that took his child to the gun store and ended up having his beloved weapon discharge and kill his son? That guy? Why is it more difficult to work in the financial industry than to purchase a gun? Screwed up. Completely.
Illy December 15, 2012 at 05:27 PM
We need a new amendment to amend the Second. I understand the need of guns when this country was wilderness but who exactly are we protecting ourselves from know. It just gives an opportunity for crazy people to have access to guns. It is police job to fight the drug dealers. You rarely hear mass murders at schools in Europe where guns are illigal.
Eileen December 15, 2012 at 05:39 PM
Hey guess what Anthony, just because people are doing drugs and shooting innocent people doesn't make it right and it doesn't mean we are naive in believing that we can live in a better world. Really Anthony what a contradiction, you insult one person for having an opinion and God bless the people she is standing up for. What is that about? Kim I agree with you, why does a teacher from Connecticut need a semi-automatic weapon? Why does anyone need a semi-automatic weapon, except military?
Patrick Troupe December 15, 2012 at 06:29 PM
Yes, there is no reason to own semi automatic handguns or rifles. You could easily "defend" your house with a shotgun or 22.. Overkill.. You gun nuts all come to the fold to defend your guns but how many times have you needed a gun? We live in the suburbs of chicago, you NEVER need a gun. Just admit you want a gun because you are scared and paranoid and cant take care of yourself..
David Parrish December 15, 2012 at 06:30 PM
This isn't about a gun! This is about a mentally duranged individual. It's about pre-meditated murder, not a person who "snapped". He knew exactly what he was doing. To blame it on a hand gun, a rifle, or a bow and arrow. It doesn't matter. The guns were just tools of his choice to commit a herendous and tradgic crime. Take the guns away, and he'll find another way to make his point. Guns laws won't stop anyone, and if he wanted to attain a gun, he could easily do that on the streets! It's people who cause harm, not guns! How many times does that have to be said to sink in?
Patrick Troupe December 15, 2012 at 06:49 PM
Yeah, and in China 22 people were stabbed AND ALL EXPECTED TO LIVE... Because America has 300million guns and China doesn't we have 22 less children than they do. David you would rather have dead children I suppose?
Debra Peck December 15, 2012 at 08:14 PM
The gun insanity and paranoia in this country puts all of us in danger. Since the NRA won't let guns go away, then do away with ammunition. Let's see how many people get killed with no bullets.
Bill Heeter December 15, 2012 at 08:46 PM
The issue of guns and killings is a knee-jerk reaction of people with little or no understanding about firearms, and unfortunately this will continue. Why is there so much focus on guns and the negatives? The liberal/progressive media would like the USA to become socialist/communist state with little to none of the personal freedoms and liberties we currently enjoy. Guns are not the the problem! If these anti-gun liberals really want to address the issue, here are three topics of concern. The consistent and flagant use of violence in almost all video games that children and teens play. The decline of morals and family from a society obsessed with having more money & status, and therefore less time for appropriate child rearing. And most of all, the removal of God and the Constitution from our contemporary society. To all who read, please accept Jesus Christ as your personal lord and savior. God Bless...
Bill Heeter December 15, 2012 at 08:58 PM
to patrick t. Unfortunately, the positives of gun ownership are never in the limelight due to the liberal/progressive stranglehold on the media. Guns save thousands of lives annually by private citizens exercising their right to kep and bear arms, AKA the 2nd ammendment. BTW, what do 22 stabbing victims in China have anything to do with this...
Bill Heeter December 15, 2012 at 09:03 PM
Debra... It would be interesting to know what you think is worth fighting for in this day and age. If people like myself find it worthwhile to fight for the US Constitution, what do you think is worth fighting for? Socialism? If so, please contact me so I can help you pack...
Stephanie Price (Editor) December 15, 2012 at 10:57 PM
All good points....but there are way too many guns manufactured each year and too many people who should not have access to them. It's too easy for children and teens to get their hands on them.
Lisa Sadowski December 16, 2012 at 01:48 AM
Kim sadly, there are many very closed minded individuals out here in a frenzy about their gun rights being taken from them, even with the horrific news that these little angels were shot MULTIPLE TIMES IN THE HEAD AT CLOSE RANGE!!!!! They defend the mother's right to bear arms, however our founding fathers NEVER intended for us to own guns that shoot multiple rounds in a very quick manner or to obtain those guns if we are unstable. The mother KNEW her son was disturbed, yet didn't take care to ensure her guns were kept locked away from him. Everyone else seemed to know the boy was disturbed, so for this relative in Crystal Lake to make excuses for her sickens me. Where is the sympathy for the victims?? Sorry I have zero sympathy for irresponsible gun owners and irresponsible parents who claim they have no idea their child is disturbed, even though everyone else around them seems to see the signs.
Lisa Sadowski December 16, 2012 at 01:52 AM
Actually, David, the issue is about BOTH. It is about the mother who apparently knew the boy was disturbed but still kept those guns accessible to him. It is about a mom who potentially (although I will reserve judgment for now) knew he was disturbed but didn't institutionalize him or get him counseling and meds and a society who stigmatizes the mentally ill so that they often refuse to get help. And yes, it IS about GUNS. If the man walked in with a knife or a fork or another riduculous 'weapon' that you so claim could have done so much damage, it is impossible that he could have killed those kids in such a short time and so many. Your argument is so laughable that it is really not worth responding to.
Lisa Sadowski December 16, 2012 at 01:58 AM
I guess those Catholic children who burned to death many years ago in the Our Lady of the Angels school were turning away from Jesus at the time, Bill?? REALLY?? I guess all conservatives are the moral ones, REALLY?? God is not republican or democrat. God is an independent. Get that straight. There are so many 'immoral' positions on each side that for you to blame ' liberal' this and 'liberal' that is laughable at best. The US Catholic Bishops and Nuns on the Bus, two prominent Christian groups both called the Ryan/Romney plan extremely immoral, as it severely affects society's most vulnerable people: elderly, children, poor, and the sick. All so that the top 1% millionaires can have an extra yacht or two or extra European villa while the vulnerable do without proper healthcare, food, housing, and heat.

A US citizen dies at a rate of 1 every 13 seconds or so. We must ban cars, they are too dangerous in the control of inept. As for the comment on social programs, which are entirely overused, less than 50 percent of Americans are working taxpayers. My question is can lib/dems do simple math at all? tax dollars-tax burdens=bankrupt USA.

2nd A is here to stay. Like it or leave. The sicko's like the guy CT are nuts if he couldn't get a gun he would have used a bomb if he couldn't figure that out he would have burned the place to the ground. Its not a gun issue.

I would like to know why Sister-in-law moved to Connecticut with family. Why she need weapons for. She said she fears for her life. Why in CT.? It make no sense at all. No matter where you lives it will happen anyway.
Chris Farley December 17, 2012 at 02:47 PM
Who are you? Why do you have forks in your kitchen, I'd like to know,
Anthony P. December 17, 2012 at 04:33 PM
Eileen, you make no sense. First off you missed my point completely. I never said that people are doing drugs and shooting innocent people. Sounds like you hear what you want to and go off of that. A prime example of what's wrong with society. My point is that you make guns illegal and people will still get them LIKE ILLEGAL DRUGS. BOTH ARE CRIMINALS. The only thing they have in common. Your kettle logic is flawed. I make no contradictions. Whether you think I insulted her or not has nothing to do with the horrible incident that took place in CT. Go back to your sheltered life. If you think that's insulting then you are indeed sheltered.
jj December 17, 2012 at 09:29 PM
I really don't care if you like my statement or not cause I am a bigger person then that. All I want to say is this: We can all bitch and moan all we want about who is right and who is wrong. But we are all missing the /bottom line we lost 26 lives unnecessarily. This could of been prevented. It has nothing to do with God or religion( if there is one) So I don't even know why its brought up. Can't you all see that by us insulting each other we are no better then the kid with the gun.(We are making one another mad and then they are going to go drive a car and get in to a car accented or yell at our kids/spouse ect).We all blow things way out of proportion. All this violence need to Stop and Stop now.
Chris Farley December 17, 2012 at 09:35 PM
Once you remove those forks in your kitchen I'll feel better.
