Veterans Take Center Stage at Area Schools Monday

Several area schools showed their appreciation for local veterans while also teaching their students the importance of Veterans Day during various planned activities Monday.

Marlowe Middle School welcomed area veterans with a breakfast served by students in the school cafeteria at 9 a.m. A recognition program followed in the school's auditorium at 10 a.m.

The program consisted of the introduction of guest veterans along with musical performances by Marlowe’s band and chorus students, and select readings by students.

Several other area schools had the following planned events scheduled for Monday to recognize veterans:

Algonquin Middle School: A "war-simulated" dodge ball game will be played in gym at Algonquin Middle School on Monday. There will be medics and camouflage to make the event feel more real. Students will also be creating holiday cards for service members at the Landstuhl Medical Center in Germany. 

Each grade level at AMS will either be reading about or watching a video on Veterans Day and completing a variety of educational activities related to veterans. 

Dundee-Crown High School: On Monday, Charger County Drive will be lined with American flags to welcome veterans that will be visiting the school that day. Also, the drumline and color guard will be playing and waving American flags for those entering the school. War veterans will be paired with social studies teachers for the day and will share their experiences with students and answer any questions. 

During the first five minutes of third period, the DCHS choir will sing the national anthem and the trumpet players from the DCHS marching band will play "taps" at the end of the day. 

Lake in the Hills Elementary School: Students at Lake in the Hills Elementary School students will be wearing read, white and blue on Monday. A variety of activities, including plays and readings are planned for Veterans Day. 

Neubert Elementary School: Fifth grade students will be writing letters to veterans. In addition, teachers will be reading books to students about veterans and teaching the importance of Veterans Day. 

Westfield Community School: Students will be writing letters to former District 300 students who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Staff will be showing slides of their family members who are currently serving overseas. Area veterans will be visiting the school to share their experiences. Also, veterans from the Lake in the Hills-Algonquin American Legion will present a historical background on different U.S. flags as well as flag etiquette. The day will conclude with the school orchestra playing songs such as "Yankee Doodle," "God Bless America" and the "Star Spangled Banner."
