Algonquin Police Have New Tool to Save Lives

Woodstock foundation provides an automated external defibrillator to police.

When Sara Kathleen Schacht died of sudden cardiac arrest in 2002, there was no automated external defibrillator (AED) available to bring her heart back into rhythm.

The 18-year-old Woodstock High School graduate’s family decided then to form the Sara Kathleen Schacht Memorial Fund to raise money to provide AED’s in locations throughout McHenry County.

This week, Algonquin police department received a portable AED provided by the memorial fund.

Schacht’s family wants to make AEDs as accessible as fire extinguishers so their daughter will not have died in vain.

Algonquin officers have received the training necessary to use the AED and the machine will be used in one squad, Police Chief Russell Laine said.

“It has a lot of potential to save people’s lives,” he said of the donation.

Schacht’s family is holding a poker run on Aug. 17 sponsored by the Moose Lodge #1329, Halftime, 1/2X Bar & Grill and Miss Kitty’s.
