13 Things You (Didn't Know You) Could Do on Patch

Algonquin Patch is more than just news - learn how you can use all of our tools!

Many think of Algonquin Patch as an “online newspaper" - but really, that's only a part of our online community.

From our online business reviews to local Q&A's, there's probably at least one thing you didn't know you could do on Algonquin Patch in our list of thirteen below:

1. Be a Patch Blogger

Find out what's happening in Algonquin-Lake In The Hillswith free, real-time updates from Patch.

  • Are you passionate about Algonquin's core issues?
  • Are you an expert craftsman or hobbyist who can share do-it-yourself tips?
  • Do you have a useful skill you'd like to share with our readers?
  • Can you write compellingly?
  • Can you just make us all laugh?

Then, we want to hear from you.

This isn't a reporting job. It's blogging. You write what you want to say when you want to say it. Do it on your schedule, whether that's posting multiple entries per day or a couple times a month. If interested, email editor Savannah.Ziegelbauer@patch.com.

2. Comment on an Article

At Patch, we believe that "news is a conversation." A great deal of our reporting comes from what readers tell us in e-mails, phone calls, tweets and conversations around town. Don't hesitate to post a comment or question – we'll get back to you!

3. Post an Event – Everything from Yard Sales to Political Fundraisers

Do you have a garage sale coming up, know about a school fundraiser or an art exhibit at a local coffee shop? You can add your event to our calendar here. Patch often features these event listings on the front page as the event draws closer, in columns like “Event Spotlight” and “5 Things You Need to Know Today.”

4. Send a News Tip

At the top of our News page, there's a button that will let you share hot tips about what's happening in town - don't hesitate to tell us about stories we should cover. Your message will be sent straight to Chris Caesar, Malden Patch's editor.

5. Search Local Business Reviews

Do you want to be the first to tell your friends whether the new restaurant in town gets a thumbs-up? You can post a review of your favorite (or not-so favorite) restaurants, mechanics and government agencies in our business listings.

You can also use our listings to narrow your restaurant search by seating, price, cusine and all sorts of other features.

6. Social Media Engagement

You can "like" us on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter. Immerse yourself in our content and actively contribute and engage via social media. If you're already a fan of us on Facebook and Twitter, please tell your friends to follow us too!

7. Sign Up for Our Newsletters

The daily Algonquin Patch newsletter brings you all the articles and announcements that have been posted in the last 24 hours in a more “traditional” early newspaper format – without the dead trees, of course.

The newsletter is delivered to your e-mail daily at 6 a.m. To subscribe, check the sign-up link in the upper right corner of the site.

8. Ask a Question

Maybe you want to know where locals go for a good cup of coffee in Malden, or where you can get an inexpensive haircut. The Q&A section is a place where you can post, or respond to, a question from fellow Maldonians.

9. Claim Your Directory Listing

Our team of researchers actually hit the streets and visited businesses, schools, parks, libraries and more so we can provide photos and detailed info about all your local services. To contact us about the listing for your business or organization, just e-mail us at directorysupport@patch.com.

If you own or manage a business or group in our directory, visit your listing and claim it to add info, photos and more.

10. Post a Free Announcement

Proud of something? Tell us who made the honor roll, or share school awards, social notes and thank you shout outs – heck, let us help you find your lost dog, if you're at your whit's end. Whatever you need to say to our readers, we welcome you to post an announcement. Just remember, our Terms of Use say announcements should be for personal use and not for advertising.

11. Upload Your Own Snapshots and Video

Upload videos of high school football touchdowns or your Malden Little Leaguer's first home run. Post photos from local festivals, or send in a snapshot of your best holiday recipes. We invite you to share with the rest of the community the memories you've caught on camera. If we don't already have a story posted that you can add to, just e-mail me at savannah.ziegelbauer@patch.com.

12. Advertise With Us

For all advertising queries, please send an e-mail to Vanessa Baker at vanessa.baker@patch.com.

13. Send a Letter to the Editor

Patch would like to invite every member of the Algonquin community to submit a letter to the editor. Express your thoughts or concerns about anything that might be stirring up conversation around town, and we'll post it.

Make sure it's not longer than 300 words and e-mail it to me at savannah.ziegelbauer@patch.com.
