Take a Ride on the "StudentsXpress"

Catch a ride on the StudentsXpress magazine - this colorful and beautifully designed magazine reads like a storybook.

There is a new "Xpress" magazine that just arrived in the City of Chicago and it is making its way to all the PreK - 8th grade schools.  The name of this new magazine is StudentsXpress and the creator of this colorful and beautifully designed magazine is Rachel Switall.

Rachel Switall is the mother of two children who attend Nettelhorst Elementary, a Chicago Public School in Lakeview. She created “StudentsXpress” as a means to allow young children to address various topics and express themselves. The magazine began years ago as a thesis project while Rachel attended the University of Illinois at Chicago, earning an MFA with a focus on graphic design.

Working with the Peace Museum and children in Cabrini Green, she taught children how to solve conflicts without using violence, to express themselves through their words and their art. The work that resulted was then printed as “Peaceful Times.”

After graduate school and working in the corporate world as an Art Director for various trade magazines, Rachel decided to do her own thing after having kids. Deciding to stay home with her children, she revisited her thesis project and began to reach out to Chicago Public Schools all across the city, thus creating “StudentsXpress.”

Rachel describes her magazine on her website as follows: Each issue focuses on a feature topic for students to address through writing and artwork. With two issues printed last school year (topics being “What Makes Me Special” and “Courage”), this year StudentsXpress is being printed four times and reaching even more students.

Currently, 21 schools are participating in neighborhoods such as Lincoln Park, Roscoe Village, Lakeview, Lincoln Square, Logan Square, Old Town and Engelwood, giving the Winter 2012 issue a circulation of 13,000. The upcoming Spring issue, with over 13,000 in circulation, will be all about “Earth Day.”

The mission of this magazine is so relevant right now, with all the events happening in our schools today.

Mission: While showcasing art and writing from students in Chicago Public Schools, StudentsXpress aims to promote creativity and literacy, encourage alternative expressions, create positive self esteem and open discussions.
