LITH Airport Worth a Visit

Come find out what ideas we are tossing around as well as how you can add flying as a hobby.

Hello again everyone,

As I came into the office this morning, I couldn't help but see all of the aircraft lined up for take off. The airport has been as busy as the Randall and Algonquin intersection at 5:30 pm. The reason I bring this up, is because even with all the activity here, there are very few people who look on and see the planes.

At our recent LITH Pilot Association meeting, we discussed how intimidating it is for people in the community to come to the airport and just watch the planes or talk with a pilot. I have lived in the community for quite some time and until I took the position I am in now, had never been to the airport. I had gone past it on the bike trail here, I had driven many times down Pyott past it, but had never just stopped and watched as planes landed and took off. Part of it was the idea that I didn't want to be told to leave, especially after 9/11. I know that airports have high security so I didn't want to have to deal with that.

Then I came to the airport and found how friendly of a place it is. Pilots are such amazing people and just like anyone that has a hobby, they love to show off their planes. It isn't out of the ordinary for a pilot to ask an onlooker (especially if there are children there) if they would like to come look inside the plane. I had never seen a small plane on the inside previously and had this false notion that every small plane was like the movies, those nice spacious private jets. This is not the case, each plane has some unique quality to it.

Also during the meeting, we discussed how we want to get the community involved in the airport. The village of Lake in the Hills has an open house coming up in August. There was an open house a few weeks back but the turnout wasn't amazing because weather just didn't cooperate.

I encourage all Lake in the Hills residents to come out to the airport. As long as winds are light and the sky is clear, I promise this will be a great experience. There are also groups here at the airport for just about any age. If you are interested in flying, I strongly suggest giving Blue Skies a call. You can reach them at 815-356-8121. They are the friendliest people you can ask for and will provide you with all the help you will need in going up in a small plane for an introductory flight.

If you are interested in coming to a Pilots Association meeting, our next meeting is June 16th at 6:30 pm. There will be food and drink provided. You do not have to be a pilot to come, it is open to all that are interested in aviation.
