Visions for Vacancies: Former Ethan Allen Building

The location of the former Ethan Allen furniture store has sat vacant since 2010. Tell us in the comments' section what you think should go in this location.

If you got to choose what went into the former Ethan Allen building at 2391 County Line Road in Algonquin, what would you pick?

There are currently no potential buyers for the 20,000 square foot building that has sat vacant since 2010.

The business is visible from Randall Road and is located in front of , which is located in the Algonquin Galleria. The storefront faces a strip mall that is mostly vacant other than a Massage Envy.

The size of the store itself makes it a challenging sell, said Russ Farnum, community development director for the village of Algonquin. Farnum said most smaller stores are in the 2,000 to 5,000 square foot range while on the other end of the scale, a larger store is typically around 50,000 square feet.

At one point, Farnum said a fitness club explored moving into the former furniture store  but that did not pan out and there hasn't been much more interest in the building since.

Tell us, Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Patch readers, what business would you like to see in the former Ethan Allen building? Share your ideas in the comments section below.

Whole Foods is an awesome idea!!

Nordstroms rack, bed bath and beyond, crate and barrel, or a whole foods would be great too.
Dorothy Kotscha July 13, 2012 at 12:32 pm
Mariano's. It's got a similar approach as Whole Foods, but it's a whole lot more affordable.
Nikki Campbell July 13, 2012 at 12:35 pm
Sweet Tomatoes Restaurant!!!

Whole Foods or Mariano's would be a nice addition to the area, but not in this building. The set up is such that there would not be enough parking.
Rachel Marks July 13, 2012 at 01:13 pm
whole foods would run trader joes out of business though. maybe an REI or something.

Sweet Tomatoes or Crate & Barrel would be awesome! McHenry Co. residents have been driving for YEARS to get to a C&B!

turn it into an unemployment/ welfare office.
seriously, you shopping fanatics don't have enough selection on Randall Road already? you need every single chain to be represented? suburban consumption and consumerism is akin to substance abuse.

From the Algonquin Patch Facebook page, a suggestion for a book store and another for a good deli and/or bakery.
Amykate Cammarata July 13, 2012 at 10:53 pm
wanting healthy food choices isn't substance abuse...slightly confused.
Dorothy Kotscha July 14, 2012 at 01:19 am
good point.

I disagree. Whole Foods has a different concept than TJs, and I think that the prices at TJs are such that it would provide WF with a healthy dose of competition.

What about a West Elm? I have to drive to Oak Brook to get my West Elm fix.
Dorothy Kotscha July 14, 2012 at 01:21 am
Well, it IS a shopping area...
Dorothy Kotscha July 14, 2012 at 02:39 am
How about a children's museum or something family focused?
Mikein algonquin July 14, 2012 at 02:29 pm
If they want a Whole Foods or Mariano's in the area, a nice location would be the old Algonquin Lanes, recently closed. It is large enough, has adequate parking, and would vitalize the east side of town.

I will third Sweet Tomatoes! LOVE that place, hate driving all the way to Schaumburg or St. Charles!

When the Dominicks at Algonquin/Randall inevitably closes, it would be a great spot for Mariano's to come in.

Bad location and waaaayyy expensive for soup and salad. Especially after the menu change earlierRead More this year. And I was a loyal customer before that. Too bad. Wonder if they will open in another location?

I am very disappointed. I bought a groupon recently and I redeemed it at the store, but they gaveRead More me a gift card for the remaining balance. What do I do with this gift card now?
