Title Boxing Club Opens in Crystal Lake

New health club features workouts tailored after boxing, kickboxing and mixed martial arts.

Has your exercise regimen gotten a little too routine?

Does your workout feel worn out?

Well, there's a new health club in town that promises to give ordinary fitness programs the one-two punch. Title Boxing Club opened Monday, Nov. 12, in the Randall Plaza, 435 Angela Ln., in Crystal Lake (just a few doors down from the Fire Bar and Grill).

Title Boxing Club's "Power Hour" classes, touted as "the hottest fitness concept sweeping the nation," have borrowed the best from boxing, kickboxing and martial arts to create fun, high-powered workouts.

But don't mistake the classes for an ordinary boxing club.

"The biggest misnomer is that we're a boxing club," said owner Marvin Somlo. "We're a boxing fitness health club."

Somlo said Title Fitness workouts provide an intense cardio workout. The club's group fitness classes can help participants burn up to 1,000 calories, according to Title Boxing course descriptions.

Based out of Kansas City, Mo., the company started selling franchises two years ago. Today, there are 350 franchises sold with at least five of those in the Chicago region, Somlo said.

So far, 70 percent of Title Boxing clients are women, Somlo said.

Heather Morris, manager of the new Crystal Lake gym, said the boxing-oriented exercise routines are fun, exciting and a break from the ordinary exercise classes.

"This is edgy. People walk out of here feeling strong," Morris said. "It's like you're harnessing your inner chick."

Somlo has painted and redesigned the 7,800-square-foot facility once occupied by Cardinal Fitness. In place of treadmills and fitness machines 61 heavy boxing bags now hang from the ceiling.

In addition to the group classes, Title Boxing also offers the services of personal trainers. And, per company policy, the first class is always free.
