Downtown Algonquin Gets Late-Night Eatery

Downtown Dogs 'n' More, a retro-inspired restaurant, specializes in hot dogs and classic American food at a reasonable price.

Manager Omar Razvi and co-owner Mike Guido were looking to grab a quick sandwich or hot dog in downtown Algonquin without getting in their cars. When they could not find one, they joined with co-owner Jami Dehlin to open Downtown Dogs ‘n’ More.

Downtown Dogs ‘n’ More, 107 S. Main St., Algonquin, across the street from and a couple stores down from the in downtown Algonquin. With a vintage style and cozy atmosphere, Downtown Dogs' menu focuses on hot dogs, burgers and sandwiches – all at low prices.

The business has been going pretty well, Razvi said. Since its soft opening three weeks ago, he said a number of people have come in for their opening specials.

“We’re just trying to get people in.” Razvi said.

Razvi, Guido and Dehlin are all veterans of the restaurant business, although this is the first restaurant any of them have owned.

“I’ve worked in restaurants forever,” said Dehlin, an Elgin resident and Dundee-Crown graduate. “I got tired of working for other people and decided to try working for myself.”

Razvi has lived across the street from the restaurant for about a year, while Guido lives upstairs in the restaurant’s building.

“We live here, so we saw the need for it and the potential with Founders’ Day," Razvi said. "It’s nice to be able to walk to work. We’re hoping we can make it.”

Razvi’s favorite item on the menu is the classic Chicago-style hot dog, while Dehlin said her weakness is the chili cheese dog.

“I’ve eaten like a million hot dogs already,” she said with a laugh.

Downtown Dogs ‘n’ More definitely delivers on its vision of good food at affordable prices. The most expensive menu item is the gyros plate, served with fries and a side salad for $5.49.

The hot dogs are all $1.99, except for the supersize dog, and the burgers range from $2.69 to $3.49. Add a side of homemade fries for as little as 99 cents, and a fountain drink for 89 cents.

Downtown Dogs ‘n’ More is running opening specials with coupons. The coupons include $1.99 for a hot dog, fries and a drink; $1.99 for an Italian beef sandwich, and two hot dogs and fries for $4.

Downtown Dogs ‘n’ More is open from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays, and 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
