Businesses Benefit From New Sign Code Changes

Amendments to the sign code allow for businesses to promote products daily.

The village of Algonquin recently made an update to its sign code, which will help businesses when it comes to promoting and advertising.

On request by staff and small business owners, Algonquin now allows for the use of sidewalk signs to promote specials and products during business hours, so long as they meet certain criteria with size and location.

Exterior banners can be displayed three times a year now instead of twice, and sidewalk signs no longer require a permit. This affects gas stations as well – they are allowed to use LED lighting for the announcement of gas pricing only.

"The only negative impact on business owners would be that sign permit fees were raised a small amount,” said Diane LaCalamita, Algonquin building inspector.

The cost for temporary sign permit change increased to $40 from $35. Until the sign code change, the permit fee had been the same since the sign code’s adoption in 1994.
