UPDATE: Flash Flood Warning Extended

A flash flood warning for McHenry County has been extended until 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. 

Doppler radar indicated an area of moderate rainfall over McHenry County and runoff from previous excessive rainfall is expected to cause continued flash flooding, according to the National Weather Service. 

Up to six inches of rain has already fallen near Algonquin, according to the NWS. 

Communities expected to experience flooding include: Algonquin, Barrington, Carpentersville, Arlington Heights, Elgin, East Dundee and Fox Lake. 

Excessive runoff will cause flooding of small creeks, streams, country roads as well as to farmland along the banks of crees and streams, according to the NWS. 

Most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. Do not attempt to cross bridges, dips or other low spots if water covers the roadway and never try to cross a flowing stream, according to the NWS.

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office has reported the following road closures as of 8:50 a.m. Wednesday: 

  • Walkup/Crystal Lake Road between Anvil rd. and Mason Hill rd. (Completely Shut Down) Kishwaukee Valley Road/Hiawatha Road
  • Charles Road East of Nelson Road
  • Deerpass Road North of River Road
  • Flemming Road just North of Country Club Road
  • Oakgrove Road/Rammer Road
  • Ridgefield Road between MCC entrance and the cemetery 2 spots Route 31 / between McHenry and Crystal lake
  • Route 14 / Route 176
  • Route 176 / Terra cotta
  • Route 47 / Ware
  • Route 14 / Hartland
  • Route 176 / Behan
  • Route47/Route120 NowOpen
  • Route 23 / Kishwaukee Valley
  • Northwest Highway/Nimbi
  • Algonquin Rd// Edwards Rd
  • Crystal lake rd / Between Mason Hill and Anvil

POSTED EARLIER WEDNESDAY:
 Several roads are impassable in McHenry County as area officials urge motorists to drive with caution.

Meanwhile, a flash flood warning is in effect for McHenry County through 11:30 a.m. A heavy downpour brought as much as four inches of rain to some areas early Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The Crystal Lake Police Department reports that several roads are impassible. Motorists should avoid the following roads:
  • Route 176 for the next two hours (as of 7:30 a.m.)
  • Main Street and Crystal Lake Ave.
  • Route 176 at Countryside Nursery
  • Dole Ave. Between US Route 14 and Dole
  • Terra Cotta Rd. at Terra Cotta Ave.
  • The area of 300 N. Walkup AVe.
  • Edgewater at North Ave.
  • McHenry and Lee Street
  • Berkshire and Covenrty
  • Woodstock Street at Lincoln Parkway
  • Area of 328 Hickory
The McHenry County Sheriff's Office has reported standing water on some roadways throughout the county, according to the sheriff's office Twitter feed. 

A woman's car became submerged in water in Crystal Lake and police closed Oak Street between Woodstock and Route 176, according to the Northwest Herald. A trained spotter reported flooded roads in the Woodstock area early Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather service

There is also flooding along Route 14, according to the Northwest Herald. 

Runoff from the excessive rain will cause flash flooding. Specific communities expected to experience flooding include: Algonquin, Harvard, Barrington and Arlington Heights. 
 
The Fox River could also be hard hit by today's rain, according to the NWS.
Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches in the area is possible.
