Jacobs Sophomore Basketball Wins Thriller in Double Overtime

Jacobs boys sophomore basketball team defeated Huntley, 70-62 in double overtime on Valentine's Day.

In a game that the Huntley sophomores probably should have won,  it was the Jacobs Golden Eagles who walked away victorious, 70-62 in double overtime.

Right from the beginning you could tell that this game was going to be close and exciting.  The teams battled to a 13-13 tie at the end of the first quarter and were tied 22-22 at halftime.

Huntley grabbed a 6 point lead at the end of three quarters as they held Jacobs to 10 points in the quarter.  Daniel Janus who led Huntley in scoring for the game with 16 points, scored 6 of those in the third after being held to just 2 points in the first half.

Jacobs closed to within a point at 42-41 in the fourth only to see the Raiders score the next 6 points and go up 48-41 with just 46.1 seconds left in the game.   The game then turned for the Eagles.  Huntley turned the ball over twice and committed two costly fouls on three point shot attempts by the Eagles that gave them 5 points while the clock was not running.

Michael Gardner of the Eagles hit a long 3-pointer to make the score 50-46 and then Ben Murray (25 points) made all three free throws to make it a one point game.  With 6.8 seconds left, Janus hit 2 free throws to give the Raiders a three point cushion. Jacobs pushed the ball up court and freshman Ryan Sargent's three swished through the net as time expired sending the game into overtime.

Jacobs grabbed a quick early lead in overtime as they scored a layup off the opening tip and added two free throws a short time later to take a 56-52 lead. Janus scored on a rebound and putback basket to make it 56-54.  Gardner and Riley Wicks of Huntley then traded 3-pointers before Zach Gorney also scored on a rebound and putback to tie the game at 59.

Ryan Sargent again stepped up big for Jacobs as he hit a 15 foot jumper with 2.1 seconds left on the clock to give Jacobs a 61-59 lead.  Huntley then turned the ball over on the inbounds pass but quickly fouled with 1.2 seconds to play.  Jacobs made 1 of 2 free throws for a 62-59 lead.

The Raiders called timeout to set up a play for their last attempt.  The pass went in to Gorney at the Jacobs free throw line.  Zach took one dribble and launched a one-handed shot that went in to tie the game at 62 and force a second overtime.

Huntley could not get a shot to fall in the second overtime and Jacobs sealed the victory at the line as the Red Raiders were forced to foul.
