Thousands Without Power in Suburbs; More Storms in Forecast Today

More storms could be headed this way this afternoon and evening.

More strong storms are in the forecast today as thousands throughout the Chicago suburbs continue to deal with power outages from Monday's storms. 

The McHenry County area was spared from the worst of these outages with only a handful of households without power as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the ComEd outage map.

A pocket of outages in Crystal Lake was located north of Veterans Acres park — in a neighborhood near Walkup Road and West Hillside Road. Crews were working on that outage, which was caused by downed trees, as of noon on Tuesday, according to the Comed outage map. 

The western and southwestern suburbs were hit hard by Monday's storm. Thousands remained without power as of noon Tuesday near Aurora, Downers Grove, Oak Forest and Joliet, according tothe Comed outage map

In total, 300,000 people were affected by power outages in the Chicago area from a storm that moved through around 5:30 p.m. Monday and brought with it winds as high as 70 mph, according to the Daily Herald. 

Today, more storms could be headed this way. Thunderstorms are expected for northeast and north central Illinois this afternoon and evening, according to a hazardous weather outlook posted on the National Weather Service website. 

The heaviest portions of the storm could bring damaging winds in excess of 70 mph, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, quarter-sized hail, heavy rain and the small possibility of an isolated tornado, according to the National Weather Service. 

In Algonquin, there is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms today and 70 percent tonight. More showers and thunderstorms are also in the forecast for Wednesday. 

There is also a Flash Flood Watch in effect for McHenry County through 7 p.m. Wednesday. With the ground already saturated from recent storms, and more heavy rains expected, flash flooding could occur in areas, according to the National Weather Service.
