It's the Weekend! Here's What's Happening ...

Sunday plays host to a variety of amusing activities, including a bird walk, sports and art festivals and a Blues Traveler concert.

Where/When: , 300 Lakeshore Drive, Crystal Lake. Saturday, August 20 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.           

Why go: The Crystal Lake Park District hosts their last event of the summer at Main Beach. The family-friendly fun includes a bags tournament, a treasure hunt with real gold coins, fair games, the “Flying Fool” family show and a performance by 80s tribute band Bad Medicine, plus food and adult beverages for those of age.

Where/When: Corner of Church & Main in Downtown Huntley, right outside the , 11628 E. Main St. Saturday, August 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, August 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

Why go: Browse the one-of-a-kind wares from local artists at the First Huntley Artfest. The featured vendors will show wearable art, photography, ceramics, jewelry, glasswork and more, plus there will be live how-to art demonstrations, music and dance performances, free face painting and balloons for the kids and food vendors.

Pricing: Free admission and parking. 

 

Where/When: , 111 S. Hubbard St., Algonquin. Sunday, August 21 from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 

Why go: Start you Sunday off right with a selfless act and a sweet treat! Donate your blood and in return you get a free pint of ice cream from Baskin Robbins, entry into a drawing for prizes from local businesses, refreshments and the satisfaction that you helped a worthy cause. Co-sponsored by The Knights of Columbus from St. Margaret Mary Church and LifeSource. 

Pricing: Free.

 

Where/When: , 33 W. Penny Road, South Barrington. Sunday, August 21 at 8 a.m.        

Why go: Enjoy an early-morning hike around Stillman’s woods and fields to look for native birds. Avian expert Mark Spreyer will lead the group, attendants should bring a field guide and binoculars if they have them. 

Pricing: Free, registration required - call 847-428-OWLS to register.

 

Where/When: Feinburg Court Business District, near , 800 Feinberg Court, Cary. Sunday, August 21 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. 

Why go: Whether you’re new in town or just looking to find a new club or activity, SportsFest will inspire you to get physical. Visit with local youth sports clubs and sports and fitness vendors, watch fitness demonstrations, browse the sports memorabilia for sale and entertain the kids with free rock climbing, games and other activities. Plus adults can enter a raffle for fabulous prizes, including skybox seats to a Cubs/Pirates baseball game, and kids can compete in an obstacle course for a chance to win a new bike from Walmart.

Pricing: Free admission.

Why go: Rock legends the Blues Travelers play an intimate concert at the Raue Center for the Arts. Enjoy the band’s unique blues-rock-folk jams that have made them popular for over 20 years.
