Get Out - The Weekend Planner: Enjoy a bit of Ravinia in Nearby Lake in the Hills

A farmer's market cooking demo, an outdoor concert and a movie under the stars – enjoy the dog days of summer.

Where/When: , 1170 Silver Lake Road, Cary. Saturday, August 13 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.       

Why go: Shop the child-friendly merchandise at the Kids Garage Sale, sponosored by the Cary Park District. Children rent booths to sell their unwanted games, books, toys or anything else they wish. All are welcome to come shop!

Where/When: Square on Huntley, E. Coral St. & N. Church St., Huntley. Saturday, August 13, cooking demonstration is at 10:30 a.m., market is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.          

Why go: Learn how to use all those fresh-bought veggies at a free cooking demo at the Huntley Farmers Market. Denise Gray will teach attendants how to make mouth-watering salsa. 

Pricing: Free.

 

Where/When: Saturday, August 13: Walk starts at 2 p.m. at , 10700 N. Church St., Huntley; Picnic starts at 3 p.m. and Powder Puff Football Game starts at 5:30 p.m., both at , 9625 Haligus Road, Lake in the Hills; Fundraiser Night at , 11721 E. Main St., Huntley, after the Powder Puff game.

Why go: Help support local youth football programs at this all-day fundraising extravaganza. The day starts with a Walk-a-Thon, which goes from Old Timers Park to Marlowe Middle School, with prizes for the best fundraisers. The festivities continue at Marlow Middle School, with a picnic of hot dogs and drinks, then an exciting Powder Puff Game at 5:30 p.m. (gates open at 4:30 p.m.) Then cap off the day with a Fundraiser Night at Parkside Restaurant after the game.

Pricing: Registration required to participte in Walk-a-Thon, $2 admission for Powder Puff Football Game.

 

Where/When: , 235 Lions Drive, Barrington. Saturday, August 13 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Why go: This charming fundraiser includes swimming and pool games, food, a DJ, face painting and other children’s acitivities – and, of course, the duck race! Families can sponsor the duck racers, with all proceeds to benefit the Hospice & Palliative Center of Northeastern Illinois.

Pricing: Free admission. Duck prices: one duck for $5, six ducks for $25, 25 ducks for $100 or a very special duck for $50.

 

Where/When: , 600 Harvest Gate, Lake in the Hills. Saturday, August 13 from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.       

Why go: Enjoy a bit of Ravinia in Lake in the Hills! Local band No Left Turn will perform in this family-friendly outdoor show, with food and drink vendors starting at 6 p.m. and the performance starting at 7 p.m. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the show.

Pricing: Free admission.     

 

Where/When: Marengo Ridge Shelter #1, 3100 N. Il Route 23, Marengo. Saturday, August 13 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Why go: Take the family out for an outdoor picnic and movie. The kid-favorite Home Bound: The Incredible Journey will be screened, and families can bring a blanket and snacks to enjoy during the movie. The MCCD will also provide some snacks and beverages. Want to make a whole night of it? Families can also register to camp overnight at Thomas Woods campgrounds after the movie.
