Many Crystal Lake residents woke early Monday to tornado sirens sounding as a powerful storm rolled through the area. 

A funnel cloud was spotted near Route 176 and Route 14 in Crystal Lake around 2 a.m., according to the Northwest Herald. A funnel cloud was also spotted in Marengo at 1:45 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. 

The National Weather Service reported there was no confirmation of a touchdown from the funnel cloud as of 2:15 a.m. Monday in Crystal Lake. The Marengo funnel cloud was spotted about "one quarter of the way to the ground," according to the NWS Chicago

Strong winds downed trees and branches in Crystal Lake.

Six tree between three and five feet in diameter were split with parts of trees blown down along Route 176 between Route 14 and Briarwood Road, the National Weather Service reports. In that same area, crops were "matted down." 

A lightning strik is believed to have caused a house fire in Crystal Lake at 4016 Ned Drive. Firefighters were called to the scene shortly after 3 a.m. There were no injuries reported in the blaze. 

More severe weather is expected today. 

The National Weather Service reports there is a moderate risk for severe weather this afternoon evening, which could include hail, damaging wind gusts and the possibility of a tornado. 

"Monitor later forecasts and be prepared for possible warnings later today," according to the NWS.
