Building Cardboard Boats: Ingenuity Meets Duct Tape

Successful cardboard boat building depends upon design, duct tape and the rowing ability of the crew.

Nearly 100 teams participated in the Algonquin Founders' Days Cardboard Boat Regatta on Thursday evening.

At 4 p.m., the teams and their crew members - which included parents, grandparents, siblings and friends - descended upon Riverfront Park in Algonquin. There, they collected free cardboard sheets and duct tape and quickly got down to the business of boat building.

Some designs appeared well-planned, others were spontaneous creations.

In the end, few boats stayed afloat, and many crew members merrily found themselves immersed in the Fox River.
