Area Animal Shelter Loses Heat; Community Rallies to Help

Businesses and community members have come out of the woodwork in recent days to help out the Animal House Shelter in Huntley after the shelter's boiler went out this past Friday.

The boiler was used to heat the shelter's concrete floors, and Black Diamond Plumbing and Mechanical in Crystal Lake ended up offering its services free of charge to replace the boiler on Saturday.

The shelter purchased the boiler and donations made in recent days helped cover that cost, according to information posted on the shelter's website.

In addition, community members and volunteers showed up at the shelter following the news of the heat failing to help and bring blankets, jackets and pillows to help keep the pets warm. The shelter houses more than 200 cats and dogs.

The Animal House Shelter ran into more issues in the past 24 hours after a large pipe burst at the facility, according to a Tuesday Facebook post.

The pipe did not burst in the area where the dogs and cats were kept, and the animals were "all warm and dry," according to a Tuesday Facebook post from the Animal House Shelter.

The shelter is now planning repairs over the next week and looking for foster families to care for its cats and dogs while the work is underway, according to its Facebook page.

The shelter is also accepting donations of any bedding, towels, bottled water or water jugs and any items to keep "the dogs and cats calm and happy" such as, toys and bones, according to a Facebook post Wednesday morning.

Those interested in fostering a pet can fill out an application on the shelter's website. Those who are already approved as foster families can call  the shelter at 847-961-5541. Donations can be made online
