AAPLD Lobby Renovation Provides Better Circulation

One million materials circulate in and out of Algonquin Area Public Library (AAPLD) every year. With a focus on making these transactions as efficient and effective as possible, the Library is installing an automatic materials handling unit to accurately scan returned items in real-time as they are deposited.

“Returned materials will be checked-in immediately and automatically,” said Circulation Services Manager, Gary Christopherson, “Drive-up service will continue, and now cardholders will have the option of receiving a printed or email receipt upon checking-in books and other materials.”

The automatic materials handler will then sort returned items according to their correct location within the library. It will lead to a more streamlined re-shelving process.

The method of checking out materials will be simplified too. Express check out stations will be available in Youth Services, Adult Services and throughout the library. To most efficiently use the express check out system, AAPLD encourages users to bring his/her library card (or memorize his/her card number).

Soon cardholders will also be able to download an app at www.aapld.org and check-out materials using their own smart device. “Our patrons will find several convenient ways to check-out,” Christopherson said. “We’re working to eliminate the congestion and noise that can occur at the front desk during peak periods.

As a further measure, the Library will add two mobile check-out stations. These portable stations can be wheeled to a strategic location following an event or program.

The automatic materials handler is part of a larger lobby renovation project currently in progress. A vending café, comfortable seating and friendly concierge desk will occupy the repurposed space.

Lobby renovations are scheduled for completion by late September. Some services may undergo temporary disruptions, but library hours are anticipated to remain unchanged.
