Chiropractic Care in Sports News

Derrick Rose and Chiropractic Care in the News

Chicago Bull's guard Derrick Rose was suffering from painful back spasms and turned to chiropractic treatment for relief.

After a week of treatments with his chiropractor, Rose was back in the game and feeling great. Chiropractic treatment is becoming increasingly accepted as an important component of sports injury treatment.

Many athletes are turning to sports chiropractic medicine as a way to recover from injuries more fully and quickly and maintain top performance on the field.

A growing body of research continues to demonstrate why chiropractic treatment is beneficial to athletes– including a recent study published in the UK journal BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders.

Australian Rules football, which is like American football without the padded uniforms, has some of the highest rates of non-contact sports injuries when compared to similar activities, such as rugby.

The journal published a study that showed how 60 players from the semi-pro Victorian Football League participated in a sports injury treatment study.

The group was divided in half – half of the players received traditional therapy, and the other half received chiropractic treatment, as well.

How the Study Worked

The Australian football players who underwent sports chiropractic care initially received one treatment per week for six weeks. Follow-up care consisted of one chiropractic treatment session per month for the last three months of the study.

What Researchers Found

The study concluded at the end of the Australia Rules football season.

When the researchers compared the injuries between the two groups, they found that the athletes who received sports chiropractic care in addition to traditional sports injury treatment had a greatly decreased rate of muscle strains in their lower limbs.

In addition, those who received sports chiropractic care spent less time on the bench due to knee injuries because their recovery time was quicker.Clearly, when used to complement traditional sports injury treatment, chiropractic care can have a significant impact on an athlete’s recovery and performance.
