Aspasia is a philosopher and courtesan to visionary politician Pericles during Athens's Golden Age. She defies societal restrictions to become an influential in Athens' power circle. Mary is the Countess of Elgin and a beautiful Scottish heiress. She charms the fearsome men of the Ottoman Empire to make possible her husband's costly acquisitions. Both women prevail at a heavy price for their rebellion.

Chichikov, a middle-class social climber, goes on a journey to collect dead souls. These dead souls are serfs who have died since the last census was taken. However, dead, they have not yet been removed from official records, and are therefore subject to taxation. The story follows Chichikov’s bizarre plan to take out a loan against all the dead souls.
