Early Literacy Learning at the Algonquin Area Public Library

Back to school time reminds us about how your child's school success depends on strong reading skills.  Children developing early literacy and pre-reading skills will have support for their future academic advancement.  

As part of the Library's strategic plan, we offer programs that promote the adoption of literacy skills and expose children to a wide variety of literary experiences.

In our programs, talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing are incorporated with literary experiences.  Talking helps children learn new words and information, singing increases awareness of sounds of words, reading to children helps get them ready to read on their own, writing connects words with spoken language, and playing help children understand that words are symbols for real objects and experiences.

Join in on our programs to help start your child on the path to becoming a reader:

Little Explorers, Saturday September 8 10:00-10:30 am

Ages 2-5 (not yet in kindergarten) with a parent/caregiver are invited to come hear stories and participate in hands-on projects that introduce or reinforce early concepts.  Participants may get messy and are encouraged to wear washable clothing.  A 1 to 1 adult/child ratio is recommended for this program.  Registration is required to attend this program.

Nursery Rhyme Time, Saturday September 22 10:00 -10:30 am

For children 3 months to 3 years old with a parent or caregiver.  Have fun teaching your child language and literacy skills by sharing stories, finger-plays, and songs that focus on a variety of nursery rhymes.  No registration is required to attend.

Let's Get Ready to Read, Monday September 24 10:30-11:30 am

Children ages 2-5 with a parent/caregiver can learn and practice the 6 skills they need to master as pre-readers and early readers.  Different skills will be introduced at each session through stories, rhymes, and activity centers.  Each session is limited to the first 20 children, no registration is required to attend.
