The Lorax Inspires Gardening with Son

There’s a fun, inspiring new film out for kids called Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. My husband and I recently took our four-year-old son, Evan, to see the movie at the AMC Lake in the Hills 12. As the lights dimmed and we snacked on popcorn, the movie whisked us away to a world where a little orange creature protects lollipop-looking trees from destruction. I loved the movie’s message: Take care of the trees or you just might have to buy bottled fresh air!

As we drove home, I sat and wondered how much of this message Evan really absorbed. Appreciating the environment was an important lesson I learned growing up. My sister, brother and I spent countless hours exploring the outdoors. I have memories of tent camping as a family just about every spring and fall.

To help fuel Evan’s love for the environment, I thought maybe he and I could start a simple, little garden together. I don’t have a green thumb but even a few seeds growing in a pot could help teach him about plants. After doing a little research I came across a National Gardening Association article on how to start an indoor herb garden. I think Evan and I will plant basil, which we can later sprinkle on our homemade pizzas.

Did you see The Lorax? What and how do you teach your kids about the environment?

I don't think a 4 year old can get such (somehow) subtle messages but you never know with kids these days :)

Anyway, anything that can help protect the nature is always welcome, especially during such heavy industrialized times. As for indoor gardens, what can I say? I've been a fan of hydroponics for quite some time and I don't intend to go back to old-fashioned gardening, as fun as it might be.
