Sears, District 300 Each Present Their Own "Myths vs. Facts"

Recently, both District 300 and Sears Holdings posted a "Myth vs. Facts" Sears EDA literature that seem to be at odds with one another. While never specifically addressing one another, both the school district and the mass retailer lay out their side of the issue. (Read "Sears Myths vs. Facts"; Read "D300's Myths vs. Facts")

Lawmakers are expected to make their final decision during the upcoming veto session that starts Oct. 25. According to the district's website, "a core group of D300 advocates will stake out the capitol all week until the Senate votes."

The group will be assembling at noon by the Lincoln Statue on the east side of the Capitol Building. They plan to lobby both inside and outside of the Capitol from noon until 3:15 p.m., with some staying to attend the Senate Executive Committee meeting at 3:30 p.m.

When the resolution was adopted in 1989 as a way to keep Sears in Illinois, leaders set the property tax incentives to last 23 years. With the agreement set to expire in mid-2012, the district says it will lose out on more than $200 million if the tax relief is extended. Meanwhile Sears and Hoffman Estates say the area may lose 6,000 jobs if Sears were to lose the tax breaks and relocate.
