There is still time to register for the 18th Annual Run for the Bear event, which will be held on Sunday, Sept. 30 at Eastview Elementary School in Algonquin.
The 5K run/walk and 10K run is held in memory of former Eastview student Barrett "Bear" Krupa who died in 1993 after a lengthy battle with pediatric cancer, according to a District 300 press release.
As of Wednesday, 650 participants have pre-registered for the race. Online registration is available through midnight on Sept. 28. In-person registration will be available as early as 6:30 a.m. on Sept. 30., according to a D300 news release.
The event will help benefit the Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation, according to the news release. The Bear Necessities Pediatric Foundation page has more information on registering.
The 5K Run/Walk and 10K Run follows the Fox Valley Bike Path along the scenic Fox River shoreline.
When Barrett "Bear" Krupa was a student at Eastview, Bear's dream was that every child battling cancer would have the same support that he received from his friends and family before his passing in 1993.
The Bear Hugs Program supports young cancer patients (ages 0-19), as well as their immediate family who face the many challenges that accompany the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric cancer.
The Foundation's outreach serves both in-state and out-of-state children who are being treated at one of the nine major Chicago area hospitals with pediatric oncology departments.
