Thief Maces Walgreens Employee

Libertyville police are looking for a man who sprayed a Walgreens employee's face with a mace-type spray during a retail theft incident May 30.

Police Chief Clinton Herdegen said the man entered the Walgreens store, 1470 S. Milwaukee Ave., at about 11 p.m. May 30 and started loading his jacket with boxes of Allegra. When a store employee saw him, the man approached the employee, grabbed her arm and sprayed her face with a self-defense/mace-type spray, Herdegen said.

The man quickly left the store and drove away in a tan or light brown four-door vehicle with Illinois plates.

Man Dies In Three-Vehicle Crash

A man died and two people injured in a three-vehicle crash Friday at Euclid Avenue and Quentin Road.

Steve L. Banks, 32, of Mount Prospect was traveling west in a 2004 Chevy Impala on Euclid Avenue at 5:56 a.m. when he ran a red light and entered the intersection, Palatine police said.

Banks' vehicle was struck by a 2001 Chevy van, which was traveling south on Quentin Road and had a green light. Police said the impact sent Banks car careening into the eastbound lane of Euclid, where it hit a 2004 Saab.

Wrestling Coach Guilty of Sexual Abuse

A former 21-year-old wrestling coach for Lundahl Middle School pleaded guilty Thursday to charges he had sexual relations with a girl who was 14 at the time, the Northwest Herald reported.

Benjamin Flavin, of Lake in the Hills, pleaded guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse before McHenry County Judge Joseph P. Condon, the story states. In exchange for his guilty plea, Flavin was sentenced to two years of sex offender probation and must pay $1,500 in court fees, the Northwest Herald article said.

Real Estate Agent Impostor

An officer responded to the 100 block of Ravine Forest Drive for a report of a suspicious person at 10:04 a.m. May 22. The officer met with the real estate agent, who was hosting a broker's open house.

She said that a man posing as an agent came into the house and began looking upstairs. She stated she heard noises coming from upstairs and the man left. The same man also went to a home in the 200 block of Ravine Forest Drive and repeated the same thing. The man signed in using false names.

Similar incidents occurred in other jurisdictions. At this time, it didn't appear anything had been taken from the homes.

Phone Scam

A resident reported receiving three deceptive phone calls between May 15 and May 24 that advised the woman her husband won $200,000. The caller stated she was required to wire $2,850 in taxes prior to receiving the prize. A bank account and routing number were provided and she sent the funds.

The individual called a second time and asked for an additional $3,563 in fees, and the woman again sent the money. During the final call, $3,587 was requested and sent by the woman, but then cancelled after she became suspicious. When traced by police, they determined the call came from an unlisted phone number in Washington DC.

Grave Site Defaced

Parents reported that their son’s grave site had been defaced sometime between April 1 and May 24 at St. Mary Church Cemetery. Smashed flowers were discovered on top of the grave, and the vase they were in was missing. Similar reports have been made multiple times in the past, according to police
