Post Office Prices to Increase in 2013
It will cost more to mail postcards and one ounce letters come Jan. 27, 2013.
Get ready to pay more at the post office next year.
The cost to mail a one ounce letter will increase to 46 cents a stamp on Jan. 27. That’s up from 45 cents in 2012. Mailing a postcard will also cost one penny more at 33 cents. The same increase was imposed in 2012.
New Domestic pricing for Priority Mail Flat Rate products are as follows:
- Small box — $5.80
- Medium box — $12.35
- Large box — $16.85
- Large APO/FPO box — $14.85
- Regular envelope — $5.60
- Legal envelope — $5.75
- Padded envelope — $5.95
If you want to save a few bucks mailing one ounce letters, stock up on Forever stamps now. They can be used anytime in the future regardless of price increases at the post office.

Congress has destroyed the post office to further some private concerns. Six years ago they needed money so they made the post office pay them about six billion dollars a year to cover retirement health benefit costs for potential people retiring 75 years from now. No company can survive and do this. Recent news articles show the usps is actually making a profit for this fiscal year but will loose it when they have to pay comgress there six billion dollar annual payment. Get congress to do something before its to late.

Common sense, you're right. I've been watching this unfold for the past few years. UPS also treats its drivers/delivery employees like self-employed contractual employees so that UPS doesn't have to pay FICA taxes and provide benefits. I've e-mailed my legislators about this but getting worthy bill passed in Congress is worse than getting a root canal.

Not to mention though that the post office rested mostly on revenue from mass mailers and people's need to contact family and friends. The internet has taken much of that away since it is a whole lot cheaper over the long run and provides direct marketing opportunities. Much like the RIAA, they failed to quickly innovate with the times and are losing money, not solely because of it, but it is a big factor.

Have it default, declare bankruptcy, eliminate legacy cost/liabilities such as unfunded pensions and sell it to UPS, FedEx or DHL, anyone that understand logistsics and how to run a business rather than a lounge for postal employees.
