Poll: Do You Think Medical Marijuana Should Be Legal in Illinois?

A house committee this past week approved House Bill 1, which, if passed, would make medical marijuana legal in Illinois.

The Illinois House and Human Services Committee approved 11-4 Wednesday a bill that could make medical marijuana legal in the state, the Associated Press reports. The bill will now move onto the full House for a vote, according to the AP.

The House has denied similar legislation in the past.

The current legislation would allow patients over 18 years old and suffering from specified illnesses and conditions to obtain marijuana, according to the Huffington Post.

There are currently 18 states—as well as Washington, D.C.— that allow medical marijuana.

Regulate it, tax it and strictly enforce the laws governing the use and operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of it and I am all for legalizing marijuana, whether it be for medicinal or recreational use.

There should be next to no government interfence with it being fully legal. Enough already, throwing away money, though that is what government does best. They'd rather direct our focus on meaningless issues to keep the minds of the masses off the real problems: professional self-serving politicians and their fiscal irresponsibity.

Alcohol is legal, and 40% of all deaths are alcohol related. Laws do not prevent people from doing stupid things.

I don't trust this or any other drug that is used as one can get addicted to it just as much as someone who is already a drug addict!

Marijuana should be legal period, why ? people are going to buy it legal or not...Why not legalize it and tax it ?? Pay off Illinois debt and cut home owners high taxes. it would be sweet to pay off Illinois debt and give home owners a huge tax cut. A win--win for Illinois.

Alcohol is THE gateway drug yet it is legal and readily available. With the same restrictions and taxed like Illinois does everything it is no worse. Like Bill said "Laws do not prevent people from doing stupid things." It has been proven to be minimally addictive and actually have some redeeming health benefits for people suffer from cancer and some types of RA.

Hey Guys. This is not RECREATIONAL Marijuana. Read the story. This is MEDICAL marijuana.

Got news for you.....narcotics, etc are already legal for medical use and are MUCH MUCH more addictive and harmful. This is nothing compared to many other drugs already out on the market and offers people with chronic pain a much safer solution than using a narcotic. How could anyone intelligently be opposed to this? I understand arguements for and against recreational legalization, but that is not what this is about.

I smoked my first joint in December, 1967, at the tender age of 21.

Now, a mere 45 years later, I still smoke pot. I have never 'graduated' to 'harder' drugs.

I am living proof that prohibitionist propaganda is a fallacy...a blatant lie.

The worst experience I had with marijuana was spending 5 years in Federal Prison for a pot offense.

And, I am as harmless as a Beagle puppy.

I wrote about the escapades that led to my 'vacation.' I admit, I had a great time...no one was injured, no one was killed...there were no victims. We were Americans pursuing happiness in our own way...harming no one nor their property.

In 2009, over 26,000 Americans were killed by prescription medications.

Deaths caused by marijuana: NOT ONE in recorded history.

Several years ago, I had surgery on my right shoulder. Pain medication was prescribed..."take one capsule every 4 hours."
I took one capsule.
I was down for over 20 hours. When I came to, I felt like I had been hit by a truck. The next time I felt discomfort, I smoked a small amount of marijuana ...pain gone, no after effects.

I threw the pills out.

I would love to see a commercial on TV about the medicinal marijuana. Side effects..... None...... Unlike every pill that they have and the negatives out weighing the good... And the state would get out of debt, and the jobs it would create.. For heavens sake legalize it already....!!!!

Here's a thought: Empty the prisons of drug offenders to make room for the scum that kill people and illegally carry guns. Legalize stop and frisk, if he's gotta a gun without legal right to carry, automatic ten years, no parole. Get caught again, life in prison, no parole. Have a gun with you in the commission of a crime, automatic life in prison, no parole. That is the gun control that will work, everything else is politician meaningless lipspeak.

I spent 5 years in Federal Prison for a marijuana offense. While I was there, I watched armed bank robbers come and go. Their stay was usually 17 to 24 months.
I watched one lad leave and COME BACK 3 times while I still sat there for pot.

When I went to the parole board after 3 years 'behind the wall,' I pointed this out to the panel members. Their response, "You must understand that yours was a very serious offense."

Case closed--go back to your cell.
I laughed about that for another 2 years until my release. The interview was recorded and probably lays in a government archive somewhere. I would love to have a copy...I'd put it on youtube.

In that era, the early 1980's, the Feds called it 'selective incapacitation.'
