Patch Flash: Groupon Halts All Gun Deals

Chicagoland news to talk about: Cubs plan Wrigley Field renovation that could cost $300 million.

Under pressure from gun-control advocates, Chicago-based Groupon abruptly canceled all gun-related deals in North America on Friday. The move sparked anger and even boycotts from some gun business owners who say their deals were immensely popular and that the online coupon company failed to notify them of the change.

Gun control proponents applauded the move. "We, along with other groups, had been applying pressure to Groupon for some time now because we were disturbed by the flippant nature of previous gun deals," said Ladd Everritt, director of communications at The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit.

A Winnetka murder victim’s sister has turned into a gun control activist. In 1990, Nancy Bishop Langert, who was three months pregnant, was shot to death along with her husband, Richard Langert, in  their Winnetka townhome. Twenty-two years later, her legacy continues to inspire others — demonstrated by the fact that she used her last few minutes of life to spell out one last message of love.

“She dragged herself to her husband and drew a heart and ‘U’ in her own blood,” Jennifer Bishop-Jenkins, Nancy’s sister, explained at a New Trier Democrats panel on gun control.

Bishop-Jenkins, a former high school teacher, has actively sought to end gun violence since her sister’s murder.

“That event changed my life,” Bishop-Jenkins said about the murders. “That event helped me to understand that there are so many people that have suffered because of gun violence.”

The body of 20-year-old Grayslake resident, Joey Frase, was found near Campbell Airport, Tuesday. Frase had been missing since leaving a party in Round Lake on Saturday.

The Grayslake District 46 school strike ended on Monday as the school board and union officials reached a tentative agreement. Students returned to school on Tuesday.

The Palatine Village Council Monday approved a permit to allow resident Steven Brosio to have a chicken coop and house six hens, on his 1.8 acres of property

The Chicago Cubs on Saturday formally announced their plans for a lofty renovation of Wrigley Field estimated to cost as much as $300 million and take as long as five years to complete. And the Cubs are also willing to foot the entire bill for the improvements -- so long as the city eases up on some restrictions the North Side team currently faces, such as limitations on the number of home night games it hosts and the amount and types of advertising it can run due to the 99-year-old venue's landmark status,

A blind sea lion pup found a new home at the Shedd Aquarium. The sea lion named Cruz after the place of his discovery—a beach in Santa Cruz, CA—lost his eyesight to gunshot wounds.

Shedd’s Executive Vice President of Animal Care and Training Ken Ramirez said "Several animals are targeted for practice or shot with malicious intent by area fishermen for cutting into their catch or profit, or by boat owners."

The Shedd's special vets and trainers will rehab Cruz by relying on audio cues like rattle noises to provide sensory information. After his rehabilitation, Cruz will not be re-released since being declared "unreleasable" by the National Marine Fisheries Service. Lacking survival skills and the vision needed to detect predators and find food, Shedd offered to provide the disabled pup's long-term care and a permanent home.

Please remember that the second amendment right to keep and bear "arms" doesn't only apply to "guns". In fact, most of the cannon used in the American Revolution were on loan from private citizens.

On the same token, freedom of speech from the 1st amendment no longer applies, since people didn't have internet back then.

richie, Good point! Also, I really like it when the Anti-Second Amendment Advocates, try to use the, A well regulated militia, arguement. It is a great example of the flaws in a public funded education. It is a simple arguement to win, if you know your facts. 1. We are the citizens militia, in which ever, free state we live in, well regulated, means, well armed and equipted. The Constitution is for the protection of the citizens from a tyranical government. The idea that we need a Constitutional Right to arm the members of the military, is ridiculous. Personel of the Military are under Military Law, not civilian and do get the protection of the Constitution, they can be shot or hung, civilians are not subject to that treatment. A person in the Military, does not have the Right to bear arms unless ordered to do so! So there you have it!

Groupon is taking the wrong side....if they are trying to appeal to the popular side of the debate....the majority of citizens do not want government messing around with the constitution or bill of rights. There is a procedure in place if they wish to make changes, it is not up to a few temporary politicians to declare what will be banned. And BTW, is groupon going to eleiminate offering knives? How about any vehicles, what about food? Any of these can be used as assault weapons. Think..anything even your hands, are assault weapons. This country is run by people who do not have our best interest at heart and just as soon as they can eliminate enough freedoms, they will have complete control.

Also....The Langert murder in the story is heartbreaking....BUT if someone wanted to kill them, a gun was not necessary. AND if Mr. and Mrs. Langert would have had their own weaponry, perhaps they would be alive today.

The gun control advocates keep trotting out victims of gun death, yet they do not conversely showcase the saving of lives due to potential victims use of guns.

This debate is one sided and agenda driven.

It's too bad Richard and Nancy Langert did not have a gun in their home back in 1990 because if they did they would probably still be here today along with their soft tissue matter. If they had a gun they would not have suffered. RIP.

Couldn't that also have been phrased that it is too bad the attacker had a gun? Maybe then he wouldn't have entered an occupied home, or the occupants may have had a chance at an outcome where no one died. Ifs and buts...right?

Do you think the guy that entered the house with the gun had his gun registered and was he licensed? of course not. Gun control laws will only tie hands of good citizens just trying to protect their families.

Aside from Groupon's offers going downhill, I am done with them and I let them know it. Too bad they are anti-American, but that's the way things are headed around here and they are based in Chicago. As far as I am concerned they can stuff their 'Chicago Values' where the Sun doesn't shine. Hope they can afford to lose a LOT of business; I used to buy them often.

I believe that law-abiding citizens should exercise "Groupon" control. It is best accomplished by not only refusing to do business with Groupon, but also informing businesses that you will not patronize them if THEY use Groupon.

Probably should stop going to movie theaters since they show movies with guns and killings. No more video games. All cops and robbers TV programs. Reruns of old Westerns should be banned. Then we need to inventory toy stores. Let get to work folks lots to do

Not so much a problem with gun control - what we have here is a problem with Groupon control. Groupons can make humans make bad decisions - often at a substantial discount.

Since Groupon wants to be "POLITICALLY CORRECT", we should write them to advise that we are going to do the same. They are not aligned with our bill of rights, and they have shown themselves to be panderers, so they are not deserving of our money for their offerings. Really, this whole gun debate is a red herring anyway. Guns are not the problem, people are the problem. The problematic people will ALWAYS find the assault weapon they need....gas can, knives, poison....whatever. They same day as the Sandy Hook murders, there was a massacre in a school in China. The murderer killed all of the victims with a KNIFE. And there were more deceased victims than Sandy Hook. Soooooooooo...........

When you have the time, look up the China attack one more time. This time read really carefully and find out exactly how many children died there. Then come back here and retract the last part of your paragraph.

I misreported the deaths....but are you trying to say that injuring 23 young children with a knife is ok instead? I don't get the attitude ....are you a middle school teacher? The main point is, anything is an assault weapon depending on its use. Your car, your food, your implements in the kitchen, your fists, your words on the internet ...anything and everything can assault. Controlling guns solves nothing; unless the intent is for lawmakers to control the people who voted for them and pay their salary and awesome benefits. In that case, controlling guns DOES solve the problem of "We The People" getting in the way of lawmakers/ public servants goal of completing the tyrannical control process that has been in place for some time. And BTW the kooks and criminals will always be able to obtain guns. Sometimes courtesy of our own government.....(see Operation Fast and Furious for into).

So children alive (yes some missing a finger or cut badly) is the exact same for you as dead children? Ok. An attack is an attack, this is true, but there are differences in the type of attack that can drastically lower the death toll.

When will Groupon halt offers discounts on plastic diapers, that destroy the planet and kill people. They also need to halt discounts on all electronic carbon menaces that choke our atmosphere with carbon. Once and for all Groupon needs to halt discounts on all high cholesterol food products that make people fat and unhealthy. And lastly, Groupon needs to halt discounts on videos that the Secretary of State says cause violent acts, oh wait that's all different now.

Dan Cox. I really hope people don't take what you say about well regulated as fact. It's not. I suggest anyone considering it read the Supreme Court opinion written by Scalia in the Heller case. It clearly states that the 2nd Ammendment allows regulation and is not an unlimited right. None of that militia mumbo jumbo. I guess Cox overrules Scalia, Thomas, Kennedy etc....?

RB, Regulated does not mean by Regulation, the words are not of the same intent or even from the same era. Scalia made reference to regulation, but ste no limit or infringement principle. Please remember that the Militia is NOT the Army and is for the security of a free state. Who are you, to determine what I need to provide security for my state? You may wish to protect your family with a cell phone that has 911 on speed dial, I pity your family. I ask you one simple question... what are you going to do, to stop an armed killer, that is killing people and the police are not there to save your beloveds? Beg, pray, scream and cry, like the people in Newtown Conn., Aurora Colo. Columbine Colo. Tinley Park Lane Brtant, Palatine Browns Chicken, etc.

Dan, who am I to tell you? I'm not. Respectfully, the Supreme Court is who said you can have a hand gun in your home to defend it. They also said the 2nd does not provide an unlimited right to weapons.... It's not me. If you don't like it, talk to Scalia.

Dan, you're about as thick as they come.

When I brought up the DC vs. Heller case and mentioned Scalia, someone (maybe Dan. Could have been McCloud) made some comment about corrupt government. While Scalia certainly is corrupt, he should be a gun owner's and true Amurican conservative's best friend. I'm going to have to assume whoever that was who responded is just pretty darn ignorant.

Dan, your response right here is just a lot of words that say nothing. Do you have a big searchlight in your yard so you can see the black helicopters when they come to get you? I wonder if they'll separate your family when they take you to the secret internment camps.

Sully, RB and all other Anti-Second Amendment Advocates, read what Article12 of the Illinois Constitution says... in regards to militia, who is a member and what their Duties are. You need to know, what could be required of you, before you decide to be unarmed.

I was about to type same thing. I don't recall any gun related Groupons. Unless there was something from a sporting goods store. I think Groupon came up with this big announcement to try and increase there business with new customers. I haven't bought any of the Groupons I've seen in quite awhile. Most aren't that attractive to me. How many Spas can one go to?

Typical Liberals, RB and Scully only know how to change topic or use some name calling to avert the truth.... Article 12 of the Illinois Constitution, proves the militia arguement dead. Sully, you still have no come-back to SB2899, the Illinois Gun Grabbing Bill from 1/6/13 Whars up, you used to shout how "Nobody wants to take your guns". You guys can talk a good deal of horseshit, but the facts are disproving your position.
