Niko's Lodge Expected to Open in November

The former Barley House site will turn into a Niko's Lodge within the next few months.

Niko's Lodge expects to open for business at the former Barley House location by late November of this year.

Owner Niko Kanakaris and his business partner, Frank Prokos, are hoping for a soft launch by the end of November. If everything goes as planned, Niko's Lodge in Algonquin will host an official grand opening shortly after the holidays.

Prokos, a Lake in the Hills resident, is looking forward to opening the new establishment in Algonquin. He and Kanakaris recently opened the Thirsty Whale at Algonquin Commons with much success.

"We're doing great with the Thirsty Whale, and we saw this as a perfect opportunity," said Prokos of the opening at the former Barley House site. "There's no other restaurant like this in the area."

Niko's Lodge Restaurant in Wasco features a rustic wilderness lodge setting, and they specialize in comfort foods like prime steaks and rotisserie chicken.

Prokos and Kanakaris hope to open the new Niko's in Algonquin as soon as possible, but they're still in the process of obtaining permits from the village. Signs for Niko's should pop up in the next couple months.

Are you excited for the new Niko's Lodge in Algonquin? Tell us in the comments.

No he is a greedy crook who takes all the money out of his business to pay hundreds of thousands of gambling debt and does not pay his employees.

That is non-sense. Don't state your crazy ideas as fact. I've always had a wonderful meal at restaurants owned by Niko and I'm excited for this new restaurant to open.

Niko is a greedy, dirty, perverted Greek with no morals or ethics at all. Ask anyone who has ever worked for him. He never paid employees and cockroaches were everywhere. Cooks never wore gloves, most unsanitary place ever. Since he's on board of trustees and paid off health inspectors e got away with it. Boycott all his restaurants: Montarra, Pincrest, nikos lodge wasco, nikos lodge Algonquin, thirsty whale!!

Terrible food and high prices. Who throws a few bits of clam into some canned cream of chicken soup and calls it clam chowder? Niko's does.

Ate at the new Niko's and it was awful. Drink order was wrong. Rushed us to order. Had to ask for butter for bread, sour cream for potato, salt and pepper for table, and knife after they took bread plates before entrees arrived. Entrees obviously sat under heat lamp as plates were scorching hot, potato and beans dried out. The BBQ chix was flavorless. I've never had "bad chicken skin" before, but it was slimy and I almost choked on it. They are new and have a long way to go to get it right, but we will not be back to see if they get there.

Wow, as soon as I saw the "Sysco" branded butter and silverware with the "Don" label, I knew it was another TGIF covered up by the name of Nico's. We had a dumb butt off a waiter. I ordered the flounder w/crab meat stuffing. The crab was imitation crab meat. My wife got the mostaccioli which reminded me of being at a wedding...it tasted like it was made in huge quanities and re-heated. This place is aweful!! Why can't we get a genuine resteraunt that isn't a big chain.

Carrie and Joyce are stating fact, however since he no longer is part of the businesses for just the reasons stated I would say to go back and try the locations again. He's out and the new owners deserve a chance to prove they and their establishments are run nothing like when he was a part of it. It's unfortunate he turned out to be that way. Ended up disappointing and ripping off a lot of people that trusted him. Has nothing to do with the new owners and the new business though and none of this has to do with the food and atmosphere which was always good, even with him there. Don't punish new owners and don't accuse Carrie and Pat of fabricating things because they are right. May have expressed it wrong, but it sounds like they were in the long list of his victims. The whole thing is unfortunate.
