Lauzen Called Out for Cronyism He Decried in Race for Kane County Chairmanship

A Kane County committee is looking into the hiring practices after Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen hired political ally Robert Sauceda, according to reports in the Kane County Chronicle and Daily Herald.

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen came under some fire this week after he hired political ally Robert Sauceda as a billing manager for the Kane County Animal Control Department, according to multiple media reports.

Articles in the Daily Herald and the Kane County Chronicle said Lauzen initialy had nominated Sauceda as the new director of the Animal Control Department, but the Kane County Board rejected the nomination in closed session.

A week later, Lauzen hired Sauceda as a temporary employee in charge of collecting debts owed the department.

Sauceda ran alongside Lauzen in the "Reform Kane" ticket of the 2012 primary, the Daily Herald said. Sauceda had run for a County Board seat in the South Elgin 16th District.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the county is now re-examining its hiring freeze policy, which some board members say was violated when Lauzen went ahead with the Sauceda hire.

Kane County Health Department Executive Director Barb Jeffers told the Daily Herald she created the billing manager position at Lauzen's request and said the position was not advertised.

Lauzen said County Board members had suggested hiring a billing manager in the closed-door meeting in January, when Lauzen had suggested Sauceda for the Animal Control director position.

In a Kane County Chronicle letter to the editor, Lauzen said he felt Sauceda would prove himself worthy of hiring.

"I hope that the more than 2,800 voters and their families who put up yard signs as 'political supporters' are not automatically disqualified from helping me now that we are putting in place needed management and ethics reforms," Lauzen wrote.

But that last comment is precisely why he shouldn't have cried cronyism every time the former Chairman/board hired someone. Of course some of your supporters will be qualified and should be hired but by crying foul by your predecessor you give up that right.

The many examples of cronyism existed while Ms. Klinkhamers friend was in charge. Was Ms. Klinkhamer not mentioned in the Bottle (campaign consultant for Burns, McConnaughay, Klinkhamer) as one picked out to throw bombs at Lauzen during the primary on public email? She has relatives that received jobs, appointments under the McConnaughay administration. When were those jobs posted, what other applicants interviewed? Perhaps some critics should disclose this as they defend cronyism?

It appears that Ms. Klinkhamer and paid political consultants (Paid consultant for Klinkhamer and Burns) and the critical board members that ignored or accepted no bid contracts, crony hiring and relatives getting scholarships, jobs and appointments now have such a distain for it.

Chris took the bull by the horns and filled a position that was leaking cash like crazy. If the position fails to return a value of more then spent then you can point the finger but until then please remember REP/DEM it is all just getting the job done. Chris is a good person and knows what he is doing! Just think he had a hard time doing this and he knew it would raise a flag or two, but he did it to save our tax dollars from a department poorly run from an admin point. Time will tell give it 90 days to see if the departments starts to correct itself if not then call him out on it then!

Oh, please. The issue here is simple: Out of all the people in the county, out of the hundreds of thousands of residents, the one guy Lauzen picks is the same guy who was his straw man against Mike Kenyon.
That's the very definition of cronyism, and the same people here who are defending his questionable hire are the same ones who have decried the practice. So do you only think it's wrong when it's the other guy doing it?
And, though this will never happen, try and stick to the point of the discussion; it's about something that happened last week, not a year ago, not in another town, not about another politician.

Why not talk about all the cronie jobs given and supported by us? Here is the topic. Cronyism. And now all of a sudden it is just happening now. I was handed a list of people that are now in high paying jobs that haven't been as recognized as Mike Kenyon's opponent. What are you trying to protect? Let's discuss these too if the theme is cronyism. There appears to be a real effort to throw a blanket over past high paying county positions and appointments with health insurance and benefits.

Politicians always seem to aquire selective amnesia once in office ... criticize as a candidate ... then once elected do more of the same

Focus, Charles, focus. The article is about Lauzen, not about anyone else. Your becoming a bit hysterical in your attempts to shift the conversation away from his hire of a political ally. Lauzen was so desperate to do something sweet for his pal that he first tried to have him run a department for which he clearly lacked the qualifications. When that caused too much stink, he whined about how he was being treated unfairly (a favorite tactic of his) then promptly put his ally in another job.
That's the subject. Stick to it.

Mike,

So the past cronyism is ok and this one hire is not. Or do you not want to talk about cronyism since it may embarrass some of your associates. We here how government needs to be open. Were you ok with all the crony hires in the past or is it just your personal distaste for one guy that gets your attention?

I'm hearing around the county that there were so many crony hires and no posts for jobs given to people as the county code stated. The code existed since 2008. So was it ok to violate the code for some friends then. Perhaps your friends. Wrong is wrong is it not?

I did not vote for him because I knew he was full it. The only thing I can say is welcome to crook county politics now playing in Kane County.

Charles:
Adjust the tilt of your tinfoil hat, put down the Lauzenberry kool-aid, and see if you can follow a simple sentence. The subject here is Lauzen's Sauceda hire. Stick with that.
The fantasy you have about me having "associates," whatever you mean by that, is bordering on the crackpot. It is a common tactic on the Patch for people like you, who can't effectively debate the issue at hand, to try and derail the discussion with goofball tangents. However, the essence of all your comments comes down to this: You're OK with Lauzen hiring his friend. Just say it, Charles. The truth will set you free.

Oh Lord, Mike Garrity is none other than former Chronicle columnist Bill Page who's good at virtually nothing - especially trying to get candidates elected.

Don't bother with him.

Ward you're an idiot. This the umpteenth time you've claimed a poster was me. Face it pal...you're done. You were shown the door by the papers and Patch...and all you have left is a one hour gig on a radio station no one listens to. You've completely sold out to Lauzen to the point of fawning embarassment.
Rave on all you want...no one is listening.

Bill,

Apparently you are!

And did you put that 40 point county board chair loss on your resume? It's virtually impossible to lose by that margin, but you did it!

Kevin Burns could've gotten more votes with the 28 grand (or so) he paid you if he he'd passed that cash out directly to the voters.

Ward: Is that the best you can do? Yes Kevin lost...it usually happens in an election someone will lose. But keep beating the drum for Lauzen...maybe another county job will open up for you. And why do you post on Patch after told the world how bad it was? Go back to your little show...and no I don't listen to that station...but could you get me a discounted pizza? That's the show...right?

Sounds like Jeff finally realized journalism wasn't his thing (the rest of us knew if 2 years ago!)

But if he took a job with the county, I can't say I blame him - it's almost impossible to be fired for incompetence once you're hired.

Page,

I could do better, but do I really need to? A 40 POINT LOSS! That ain't a simple defeat. It takes real skill to master that level of incompetence. Sue Klinkhamer got 41 percent of the county chair vote without even bothering to campaign!

One can only imagine what would've happened if she'd hired you! When I advise a politician they actually win!

Back to doing better. We could talk about Comcast or about how the people at Zylstra Harley-Davidson feel about you. What was all that stuff I heard about a columnist blatantly using his column to get "clients?"

Best of all, I never managed to get a newspaper sued. How'd that email to Joe Taybor work out for ya Bill?

Ward you continue to prove what a pathetic loser you've become. Your references are6-10 years old; get a new hobby. My reference to you scoring the county gig is current, abnd the belief is you got it as a reward for your pandering to Lauzen. Your whiny little rants here are full of errors, but typical of your resesrch. Maybe if Brenda Schory had written something first you could have lifted it, just as it's said you did with the Paul Descoteaux obit. By the way, I'm proud to call Kevin Burns a friend. Despite your nasty little threats to him, he's a good and decent guy.
Lauzen, on the other hand, wasted no time lining up jobs for his buddies. Check out who he asked Dave Rickert to hire!
And what politicians have you advised? You're not referring to those creepy emails you sent to Frasz' opponent, are you? Yuck. They read like a Peeping Tom playbook.
again, why do you post on Patch when you've trashed it? It's not like you're missed. Now run along, Jeffie, Lauzen needs his shoes shined.

I was one of those "political supporters" who put up a sign for Lauzen. I certainly will never do it again! Unfortunately he has already started with the cronyism he campaigned against. Ethics reform! What a disappointment he is. Another arrogant politician. The board rejects Sauceda and he just gives him a different title and puts him in anyway. Taxpayer money for Lauzen's friends. Who's next?
