Monday is Columbus Day — find out what is closed on this federal holiday as well as what else is happening in the area for the start of this work week.
Following a chilly weekend, we will see a slight warm up this Monday. Mostly sunny skies and a high of 61 degrees is slated for the start of the work week, according to Weatherbug.com. Wind gusts could reach as high as 35 mph during the day. A low of 43 degrees is expected.
Monday is Columbus Day, and several area schools will be closed for this federal holiday including all schools in District 158, District 300, District 155 and District 47. The post office will also be closed for Columbus Day—there will be no regular mail delivery or pick-up and no retail services will be available, according to USPS.com. McHenry County government offices and many banks will also be closed on Columbus Day.
The village of Lake in the Hills will host a School’s Out Day of Fun program during the day Friday and Monday for parents who are looking for an alternative to daycare over the long Columbus Day weekend, according to the village of Lake in the Hills. The cost is $35 and activities will include a local field trip, games and arts and crafts. The program will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Monday.
A fall recycling drop-off event will be held Monday at Presidential Park, 700 Highland Avenue in Algonquin, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Items accepted for recycling include: lawn furniture, large plastic toys, grills, clean metals, wood-based furniture (dressers, beds, entertainment units), large cardboard boxes, clean wood, aluminum gutters, and Styrofoam, according to a village of Algonquin press release. Electronics eligible for recycling include: computers, televisions, radios and other electronic items. A complete listing of items that will be accepted is online. Only Algonquin residents can participate in the event and proof of residency is required.
A reminder: Tuesday is the last day that you can register to vote. You can register to vote at either the Algonquin Village Hall, 2600 Harnish Drive, or in the finance department at Lake in the Hills Village Hall, 600 Harvest Gate.
You'll need to bring two types of identification: a driver's license or picture ID and an additional item such as a lease or utility bill. Make sure at least one form of ID lists your current address
