Bassett Owner Sides With 'Dogs Against Romney' Movement

Car tops are meant for toting luggage and sleeping bags, not for transporting the family pet, the 'Dogs Against Romney' movement maintains.

Howard and Hillary don't have a clue who Mitt Romney is, and they aren't registered voters, either.

They're not even human beings.

Yet, the two Basett Hounds and thousands of canines throughout the country have been leashed into the 2012 presidential race for the White House in quite an unsuspecting way.

The on-line movement, Dogs Against Romney is a growing coalition of pet-lovers who are appalled by the Romney family's recounting of their 1983 vacation to Canada.

Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, planned to stop once for gasoline during the trip, according to the Dogs Against Romney website.

The story, as reported by the Boston Globe in 2007, said Mitt put their Irish Setter, Seamus, into a crate and strapped crate - and dog - to the top of the car.

They then proceeded on a 12-hour drive to Canada.

However, the Romneys were forced to stop when Seamus suffered a bad case of diarrhea that began streaming down the car windows, the newspaper reported. Mitt Romney pulled over to hose off the car - and the dog. After the cleaning, the family hit the road again, the "Dogs Against Romney" website states.

"I thought what he did to his dog was mean," said Crystal Lake resident Cindi Carlson, proud owner of Howard and Hillary.

Carlson was so disgusted by the story, she went on-line and ordered the sign now displayed in her front lawn, which is located in the older section of Crystal Lake.

"Dogs Against Romney" signs, bumper stickers and buttons are popping up all over the country. The "Dogs Against Romney," organization, founded in 2007, advertises many of those campaign materials. Proof of the group's growing support: the "Dogs Against Romney" Facebook page has 63,357 "likes."

That's a lot of "likes" for a story many people don't like.

"I can't believe someone would treat their dog like that," Carlson said.

Here's just a couple of tidbits for these dogs to consider. Romney isn't some evil dog hater. Or kid hater. He's a decent man who made a mistake by putting the dog carrier up on top of a packed car that he had his entire family in to go on a family vacation.

As a dog lover and parent, i admire the fact that this guy, with a lot of money, was DRIVING his family for vacation.. the old fashion way.

Can you envision the Obamas ever taking a long trip in a car? Me neither.

But enough of that. What these dogs should know is that Romney actually saved a dog from a lake once.. the owner's boat capsized and Romney had the presence of mind to get out there and help save them. Not too many dogs have heard the story.

Another story that many people haven't heard about is that back in the evil, evil, Bain Capital days, the 14 yr old daughter of one of Romney's business associates disappeared after a 'rave' concert in New York City.

Romney stopped all operations at Bain Capital.

He flew all of the employees to NYC to help find the girl.

They set up an office...they walked around and hung up posters. They found the girl. The girl's father says that Romney saved her life.

I hope that the 'dogs against Romney' hear these stories... i doubt they will. Their owner's have a political narrative to adhere to and this does not fit.

This is the reason this country is in such bad shape. If people would focus just a little bit of energy worrying about the important stuff we would be better off.

Newt Gingrich led the charge against Romney, calling him a vulture capitalist for buying companies, profiting off of them and leaving them in the dust. . Whether you like him or not, you cannot deny that Obama's roots came out of community activism. Obama worked with churches on Chicago's industrial South Side to organize workers who had lost their jobs due to the steel mill and factory closings. I'll leave it up to you to figure out who is more committed to job creation in the US.

Youse people are just making excuses for an animal abuser. Couple that story with his private high school "pranks" - gang tackling and cutting the hair of a fellow student and walking a blind teacher into a wall...and his own sons telling us of Willard smashing their faces in a butter stick...all show the tendencies of an abusive personality.

Walsh, what do you have to say about Romney's acts of kindness? Saving a family AND THEIR DOG after their boat capsized in the lake? No, this is not a 'composite' story that twists facts like Obama's own writings...this is a news report from a local newspaper at the time.

And what about shutting down Bain Capital to find the daughter of an employee?

See, to me, these are true demonstrations of a man's character.

And also, do you know how silly you sound trying to make Dad Romney look like a monster by "smashing their faces in a butter stick"? c'mon. Romney's kids all love and respect him and seem to be well adjusted adults who did not suffer mental damage by Dad's prank on them. lighten up a little bit and try to look at the other side of things.

And how stupid is it that some adult set up a Facebook page for "dogs against Romney"? really?

Are you kidding me? Pulling pranks as a young man in school. Butter sticks and shaving the head of someone and now pulling out a dog mishap from years ago? Let me ask have you done anything in your life that is questionable? If you say no then you should run for President. This is completely assanine. We are focusing on things that happened so long ago that has no bearing on the man he is today. If we are going to try to hang him by a "yard arm" then start pulling up all the stuff Obama has done. Even playing field. If you will not vote for a man because his moment of lapse in judgement decades ago then maybe you should not vote.

marc, these losers need Romney to be a monster for Obama to have a chance of winning again. Thus the made up story about cutting the kid's hair off. Why do i say made up? Because his sister deny it happening. You tell me what boy is gonna get his hair chopped off as a prank and keep it from his older sisters. yeah. It ain't gonna happen.

I know in the heat of all elections coming up soon, it is common to dig up crap from a politicians personal past and try to use it against them. I do not doubt for a second that Romney was a bully, and now I hear an animal abuser. I guess that's the price you pay for being a privileged rich kid? The thing is, though, if Obama is just as bad, where are his bad stories? I'm sure Obama was not an angel in his past but he must not of been doing as horrid things as Romney has. A rebuttal saying that the Romney campaign doesn't need to dig into Obama's past to get people to vote differently is totally weak and wrong. This election coming up is the first one I'm eligible to vote in, and I'm proud to say Obama has my vote.

This type of reporting just shows what kind of media we have today...I wonder if this site has ever had a news article even remotely negative about Obama???? Most likely not, if so, I stand corrected.

Sorry Tbone, that's a false argument. You can't compare a factual story about Romney against a non-existent story about Obama. If you think there are no negative stories in the "normal media" criticizing the President, you clearly are watching only one news outlet for your information. Let me guess the call letters: F O X.

Where is the artcicle about Obama's brother living in a straw hut in Africa on less than a dime a day? Obviously the author is more of a dog person.

The dog story is an indicator of character. He maintains till this day that the dog liked it and it was an example of his analytical "management style". If he had just said it was a bad decision the story would have died and we would feel more comfortable with his ability to recognize a mistake

Which dog story?

the one that the media talks about or the one that they don't, where he saw a boat capsized out in the lake and the people (AND THEIR DOG) yelling for help and Romney went out there to save them?

see, the legacy media operates this way...sometimes it's not about what they talk about..it's about what they don't talk about.

I agree. The dog story (and the story about Romney shutting down Bain Capital in the middle of the work week and flying all of its employees to NYC to help find a missing daughter of one of the workers) is about character.

DrJoe...mainstream media should be burying Obama for what he has not done, and what he is doing, it's deplorable!!!!! I look at a lot of media outlets, and FOX is one of them.

To select a President based on this anecdote from decades ago when our country is facing a credit downgrade from irresponsible spending, record high unemployment and record foreclosures after 4 years of an administration claiming things are getting better? The author of this article really should examine herself.

What? Do you want me to "examine" myself or do you want me not to run articles you don't like? My job is to cover Crystal Lake news...I saw the sign & honestly didn't know what it meant because I had never heard the story. I took a photo, interviewed the homeowner and posted the article. Sorry you don't like it.

As a rescue dog lover (three goldens) I am so sick of people making a big deal out of this story. I heard it was a puppy that wasn't house broken. If the dog had diarrea issues, it sure didn't happen because of the car ride. Does anyone know what the weather was like? No. What if it was cool and nice out? I imagine Mr. Romney considered all the possibilities and went to alot of trouble to safely include their new family member. Nobody seems to get all upset about people driving around with a dog in the back of a pickup. My dogs can't wait to go for a ride and stick their head out the window. Why don't you people get a life. You're embarrassing the rest of us dog lovers.

Maybe we could add that the socialist in our White House ATE dogs. It's always selective journalism which is why people are FED UP with the MSM.

This is the most pathetic thread on the election so far. Wow millions will be losing their employer health Insurance, Physicians are quitting and looking for ways to change careers. (I am in health care) People have been on un-employment for over two years and losing their homes etc. etc. and you are writing about a dog who was naively put on top of a car during a ride that almost all dogs would love to experience just because the dog happened to have a minor issue. Give me a break. . .If this is the only thing on Obama's side. . .it makes him look desperate and a joke. The only liar so far is the one in DC who paid to have all his records sealed and the MSM who no longer has the respect it once did.
