A fire that destroyed playground equipment remains under investigation with the Lake in the Hills Fire Department.
The blaze was reported at 9:24 p.m. on Aug. 2 at Barbara Key Park, 9191 Pyott Road. When the Lake in the Hills Police Department arrived at the scene, they found the playground equipment on fire, said Detective Pat Boulden of the LITH Police Department.
The blaze remains under investigation as the police department is currently trying to determine if an accelerant was used to start the fire, Boulden said.
"We have items sent to the state lab and we are waiting for that evidence to come back," Boulden said.
Meanwhile, the village of Lake in the Hills has received a check from the Intergoverment Risk Management Agency for $40,885 to replace the damaged equipment.
The Lake in the Hills Village Board approved an agreement on Sept. 13 between the village and Cunningham Recreation to replace the equipment, which includes a spiral-tube slide, a megarock climber, tic-tac-toe panel and wavy tree climb, according to village documents.
Cunningham Recreation is the only supplier in the region of GameTime playground equipment, which is the equipment installed at Barbara Key Park, according to village documents.
An approved budget amendment by the village board for $40,885 was required to account for the expense of the new equipment, according to village documents. The village board also approved waiving the competitive bidding process for this contract.
