Area Family Raises Money for Wounded Marine

Family members of Jack Barghusen hosted a fundraiser at Brunswick Zone XL in Algonquin to help pay for his recovery.

On Sunday, Dec. 5, Brunswick Zone was host to the "We Got Your Back Jack" fundraiser for local wounded marine, Jack Barghusen.

Barghusen is currently being treated at Bethesda Maryland Naval Hospital for extensive injuries during his latest tour of duty.

Barghusen's aunt, Karen Maurer, coordinated the event.

Maurer said Jack began serving in the Marines 5 years ago. Jack is First Lieutenant of the Third Battalion, Fifth Marines. He left in August for his second deployment to Afghanistan where he was injured in October.

"He was hurt by an IED," Maurer said, which is a weapon explosive used in warfare.

The benefit for Barghusen began at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon and included pizza, soda, raffles and a silent auction.

"We're expecting between 60 and 100 people," Maurer said. By the time bowling began, there were already 25 people in attendance.

Area businesses like Funky Things, Meijer, Biaggi's, Spa Bleu, Hampshire Farms, and Port Edward Restaurant provided gift cards, baskets and other items to be used as giveaways.

All proceeds from the event will go to his parents to help fund his rehabilitation and recovery.

"Nothing is official, but we plan to do more events in the future," Maurer said.
