Poll: Unleashed Dogs, Bad Behavior at Bark Park

The Northwest Herald reports that over 500 people in McHenry County suffer from a dog bite each year.

The Northwest Herald reports dogs unleashed in neighborhoods and showing aggressive behavior at dog parks has lead at least one Lake in the Hills man to avoid taking his dog out on as many walks and from visiting the LITH Bark Park

Dog owners are held responsible for their pets' behavior — including any aggressive behavior — at the Lake in the Hills Bark Park, according to the article. The parks department has received three complaints of dog bites among the 500 dog owners signed up to use the park.

In McHenry County, there are more than 500 dog bites reported each year, according to the NW Herald.

The Northwest Herald also provides tips on how to safely break up a dog fight and on how to keep your child safe around dogs.

I used to take my dog to the LITH Bark Park until we had a run-in with a dog that was acting aggressive as we entered the park. My dog was in the holding area and one of the dogs approached the fence barking and growling. The dog actually scaled over the fence and attempted to attack my dog. Luckily, we were able to avoid a larger problem. When I approached the dogs owner (who was apparently too busy engaging in conversation to come over and diffuse the situation) his reply was: (laughing) "Oh, he thinks he owns the place". I reported this to the park district, I don't know if they did anything about it or not. Since the dog is a regular at the park, we decided to stop going there.
