Firefighters Memorial Considered for Riverfront Park

Algonquin's Village Board will vote tonight on whether to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with the fire protection district to erect the firefighters memorial.

The Algonquin Village Board will vote tonight on whether to move forward with constructing a firefighters memorial commemorating 9/11 at Riverfront Park

The memorial would include a column from the World Trade Center, according to village documents.

The village board will decide whether to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with the Algonquin/Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District to construct the memorial in a portion of Riverfront Park, according to village documents.

During a meeting on Aug. 14, Algonquin's Committee of a Whole voted to move the agreement on to a vote before the village board, which meets tonight. The village board meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. at village hall, 2200 Harnish Drive.

If approved, the hope is to have the memorial up by September at Riverfront Park, said village manager William Ganek during the Aug. 14 COW meeting.

How much will this cost? Sorry, don't want to be too cynical but Algonquin has some planning/cost issues (eg. Tyvek tower, growing government and employees that follow). If you tag something with "patriotism" I am afraid politicians will feel compelled to spend...

All the countless hours of sore backs, cut fingers, blistered feet, and sunburn skin came free of charge. Not a single cent came from taxpayer's pocket. Labor and materials were provided by fundraising, donations, and the firefighters themselves.

Hi Kevin, I hope so as I may be forced out of this town soon from the cost of living here, though I would argue that the land was not free. When I moved here over 20 years ago it was a volunteer organization. Listen I get that this mass murder was horrific and we all sacrifice for our society, I am an EMT also. Too bad our politicians use these things for their own agenda... sorry again if this sounds cynical, just the way I see it (trillion dollar wars etc...).
