AKF Spring Grove Flying Dragons headed to Tournament of Champions
Master Bonnie Thiel, of AKF Spring Grove Flying Dragons martial arts, and about 15 of her students are hitting the road for an opportunity to test their abilities in Kyuki-Do against students from other schools. Actually, it’s a fairly short trip – they’ll compete in the Spring Tournament of Champions Sunday, May 6, in Huntley.
Thiel has students from white belts to black belts. Students will have the opportunities to compete against students at their own level from other schools.
“This is a great opportunity for students to see test themselves against other students of Kyuki-Do,” Master Thiel said. “However, it’s also about having fun.”
Master Thiel couldn’t speak highly enough about the Kyuki-Do community. Most people, regardless of the school where they train, are eager to jump in and help other students of the martial art. Competition, though greatly appreciated, takes a back seat to compassion and caring.
The Tournament of Champions takes place at the Huntley Park District, 12015 Mill Street. Registration for the event begins at 7 a.m. Black Belt Competition begins at 8 a.m. and the opening ceremony is at 10:30 a.m.
Master Thiel said that, even if someone has no experience in martial arts, it’s a great event to come out and watch. Whether they take up training in the martial art themselves or not, it’s amazing to see how far competitors, from children to seniors, but mostly younger students, can push themselves.
